The one factor causing depression and anxiety in the workplace | Johann Hari | Big Think

I learned about nine causes of depression and anxiety, for which there’s scientific evidence with different sets of solutions. But I’ll just give you a very quick example of one. I noticed that lots of people I know who were depressed and anxious. Their depression and anxiety focus on their work. So I started looking at, well, how do people feel about their work? What’s going on here? Gallup did the most detailed study that’s ever been done on this. They found that 13 percent of us like our work most of the time. Sixty-three percent of us are what they call “sleepwalking” throughout work. We don’t like it. We don’t hate it. We tolerate it. Twenty-four percent of us hate our jobs. If you think about that 87 percent of people in our culture don’t like the thing they’re doing most of the time. They did send their first work email at 7:48 a.m. and clock off at 7:15 p.m. on average. Most of us don’t want to be doing it. Could this have a relationship with our mental health? I started looking for the best evidence, and I discovered an amazing Australian social scientist called Michael Marmot who I got to know, the story of how he discovered it is amazing, but I’ll give you the headline. He discovered the key factor that makes us depressed and anxious at work: If you go to work and you feel controlled, you feel you have few or limited choices you are significantly more likely to become depressed or even more likely to have a stress-related heart attack. And this is because of one of the things that connects so many of the causes of depression and anxiety I learned about. Everyone watching this knows that you have natural physical needs, right? You need food. You need water. You need shelter. You need clean air. If I took them away from you, you would be in trouble real fast, right? There’s equally strong evidence that we have natural psychological needs. You’ve got to feel you belong; You’ve got to feel your life has meaning and purpose; You’ve got to feel that people see you and value you; You’ve got to feel you’ve got a future that makes sense. And if human beings are deprived of those psychological needs they will experience extreme forms of distress. Our culture is good at lots of things. We’re getting less and less good at meeting people’s deep underlying psychological needs. And this is one of the key factors why depression is rising. And that opens, just to finish the point about what that opens up, a very different way of thinking about how we solve these problems, right? So if control at work is one of the drivers of this depression and anxiety epidemic I think well what would be an antidepressant for that, right? What would solve that? In Baltimore, I met a woman called Meredith Keogh as part of an amazing transformation. Meredith used to go to bed every Sunday night just sick with anxiety. She had an office job. It wasn’t the worst office job in the world, she wasn’t being bullied, but she couldn’t bear the thought that this monotony was going to be the next 40 years of her life, most of her life. And one day Meredith experimented with her husband Josh. Josh had worked in bike stores since he was a teenager. Again, it’s insecure, controlled work, as you can imagine. And one day Josh and his friends in the bike store just asked themselves: what does our boss do? They liked that boss. He wasn’t a bad guy, but they thought, “Well, we fix all the bikes.” They didn’t like this feeling of having a boss. They decided to do something different. So Meredith quit her job. Josh and his friends quit their jobs. They set up a bike store that works on a different, older principle. It’s a democratic cooperative, not a corporation. So the way it works is there is no boss. They make the decisions together democratically by voting. They share the good tasks and the bad tasks. They share the profits. One of the things that was so interesting to me going there which is completely in line with Professor Marmot’s findings is how many of them talked about how depressed and anxious they’d been when they worked in a controlled environment and they weren’t depressed and anxious now. Now it’s important to say: it’s not like they quit their jobs fixing bikes and went to become like Beyoncé’s backup singers, right? They fixed bikes before, they fixed bikes now. But they dealt with the factor that causes depression and anxiety. As Josh put it to me, there’s no reason why any business should be run in this top-down, depressogenic, humiliating way, right? The modern corporation is a very recent invention.Think about how many people you know who feel terrible today if they were going to work tomorrow at a workplace that they controlled with their colleagues. If there had to be a boss, they elected the boss and the boss was accountable to them. Where they chose the priorities for their workplace. A lot of people would feel very differently. Now that is an antidepressant, right?Chemical antidepressants should remain on the menu. They give some relief to some people. That’s valuable. But we need to look for antidepressants that deal with the reasons why we’re depressed. So I was able to identify nine causes of depression and anxiety and seven antidepressants like this which are actually about dealing with the reasons why we feel this way and not just blunting the symptoms.

Worse yet, many who consider themselves Christians and who are convinced they are going to heaven will be shut out – even though they aren’t indulging in gross sin or bad things of any kind! The Christians I’m referring to do not use drugs or alcohol. They don’t gamble. They don’t indulge in pornography or sexual perversion. They aren’t numbered among the wicked and vile. In fact, you may find many of them in church on Sunday morning. And they spend most of their free time with friends and family, enjoying good things. They are family people, with family values.Having said this, I want to make an even bolder statement – one that may offend some. Yet I say it in loving concern for those in the church of Jesus Christ who can’t see they are headed for disaster: Some may be in danger of losing their very soul – even though they sit in church, absolutely convinced they are on their way to heaven! This whole idea may seem like a paradox to you. But I want to prove it to you from Scripture. If ever you heed any message the Holy Spirit speaks to you, let it be this one. Here is my point: Some believers will be shut out of heaven not because of the bad things they have done – but because they have become so preoccupied with doing good, legitimate things they neglect the things that really count – eternal things.Their zeal for good things has pushed aside the things of God!Such people have become so engrossed in the here and now that they literally have no time for the deeper things of the spiritual life. They’re sweating away to build their business, advance their career, provide for their family – but their focus has become completely out of order! The Bible says: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). These are Christ’s own words – and they are not a suggestion, but a commandment. Jesus means what he says here, promising: “If you seek the Lord first, he will take care of all the things you’re toiling over – career, business, home, family. But you must make him your primary focus!” … 1. Consider What Jesus Says About the Days of Noah and Lot (Luke 17:26-30). … . Consider the Man Who Made A Great Feast – But Whose Invited Guests All Turned Him Down (Luke 14:16-24). … 3. Finally, a Large Number Who Ought to Be in the Bridal Procession Will Be Left Out (Matthew 25:1-13). … https://worldchallenge.org/newsletter/1996/good-things-that-keep-people-out-of-heavenDavid Wilkerson was the Founding Pastor of Times Square Church in New York City. Lord, let the Holy Ghost come on down. We need him, Lord, send him on down. We sing other, similar songs, pleading with the Holy Ghost to come down. But the truth is, the Holy Spirit is already here. He came down from heaven at the Upper Room at Pentecost. And he never left! Jesus promised, “I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you” (John 14:16–17). Consider a phrase Jesus uses here: “But you know him.” Recently, as I read those words for my study in preparing this message, I could not shake them off. I realized I really don’t know much about the Holy Spirit. The church talks a lot about the Spirit. We teach a doctrine of the Holy Spirit. We talk about being filled with the Spirit, walking and living in the Spirit, having the gifts of the Spirit, receiving the comfort of the Spirit. Yet it’s possible to know all the doctrines of the Holy Spirit and still not know him. If I were to ask you, “Have you received the Holy Spirit?” how would you answer? Some might say, “Yes, I received the Spirit when Jesus saved me. It was the Holy Spirit that brought me into Christ’s kingdom.” Others would answer, “Yes, I have received the Spirit, because I spoke with tongues when he came into my life. I pray in the Spirit, and tongues are an evidence that I have received him.” However, to receive the Spirit is more than a one-time experience. The word “receive” means “lay hold of that which is given.” In short, receiving is to desire an expanding capacity for greater knowledge of who the Spirit is and what his ministry is about. In fact, the Holy Spirit is not received by someone until he is allowed to take full control of that person’s temple. Paul asked the Galatians, “How did you receive the Spirit? Did you not receive him by faith?” He then declares, “You stated by faith that what you know of the Spirit you received by faith. So, has there been a continued ‘ministry of the Spirit’ to you by faith? Are you exercising faith to go deeper in the Spirit?”About David Wilkerson David Wilkerson was the Founding Pastor of Times Square Church in New York City. He gave his life for it, and said the gates of hell won’t prevail against it. Jesus himself is the foundation stone of this church. And Scripture tells us his glory and wisdom dwell in it. At Pentecost, he sent his Holy Spirit to establish the church. And he has gifted it with anointed servants — pastors, teachers, apostles, prophets and evangelists — for the purpose of building it up.It’s clear the Lord desires to bless his church. So, why does Revelation 2 present such a fearsome picture of Christ, when he appears to his people? John writes that Jesus comes to the church with flaming eyes and a thundering voice:“In the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man… His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow: and his eyes were as a flame of fire; and his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword” (Revelation 1:13-16).Now, Revelation is the summation of God’s Word. It describes the end of all things. And here is the first image of Christ we see in this book. Why does Jesus appear so foreboding here? And why does he speak so piercingly to his church? John writes that Christ’s words are as sharp as swords, cutting down to the marrow. Remember, this was the apostle who leaned his head on Jesus’ bosom. But now he finds himself on his face: “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead” (1:17).The Lord himself explains his awesome appearance: “All the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works” (2:23). The fact is, Christ loves his church. And that’s the very reason he comes to search it. He comes to correct his people in love, to purify them.First of all, Jesus tells John not to be afraid. “He laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last” (1:17). Then Christ says, in essence, “I want everyone in my church to know I’ve come to search their inner man. And I do it with eyes of fire and a thunder that shakes the soul. I won’t mince words — what I have to say will both pierce and heal. But I won’t allow any child of mine to continue in apathy or blindness. My eyes and mouth will pierce through every facade.”Christ saw something in his church. And he instructed John to write down his words and send them to the seven “angels” of the churches. This refers to his ministers, calling them the stars in his hands (see 1:16). He’s telling John, “I love these servants. I’ve called and anointed them. And now you’re to deliver my words to them.”As a pastor myself, I have to wonder: what must it have been like to open such a letter from John? “Unto the pastor of the church in New York: Thus saith the Lord, concerning your congregation…” Now imagine what those seven ministers felt.…………..@ahavajerusalem #ahavajerusalem http://ahavajerusalem.comAbout David Wilkerson David Wilkerson was the Founding Pastor of Times Square Church in New York City. These People Were Just Trying To Get To Work When This Monstrosity Opened Up

The workday commute is difficult enough without total disasters getting in the way.

I live less than eight blocks from the school where I teach and it still takes me almost 10 minutes to get to work. Since I only live in a mid-sized town, I can’t even begin to imagine the struggles of trying to get to work in a much larger hub like New York City or Philadelphia. While there are many ways I could go about bettering my daily commute, after seeing what improving the subway systems in this Japanese city could’ve just caused, I think I’ll stick to leaving a few minutes early.

Commuters in Fukuoka, Japan, were in for quite the delay when a large sinkhole opened up in the middle of the street.

The almost 100-foot-wide sinkhole is said to have started as two significantly smaller sinkholes before merging into the immense cavity pictured below.

Sewage quickly began filling the gap which is almost 50 feet deep.

While local authorities are still investigating the cause of the leak, subway crews were working just under 1,000 feet away from the split trying to extend an existing tunnel. Some say this could’ve contributed to the disaster.

Luckily, no one was injured because of the sinkhole, but many nearby residents were evacuated and roughly 170 households are still without power.

The five major roads surrounding the sinkhole site, located in the Fukuoka business district, have also been closed down until further notice. It is unknown if there was any major damage to surrounding gas lines, and investigations into potential gas leaks are still underway.

I don’t know about you, but that’s definitely not how I’d like to start my day.
