The Medical Basis of Psychiatry

Four years have passed since the last edition (3rd) of this book was published. In the intervening years, several reviews of this book have provided highly encouraging remarks about the value of this book in transmitting information on classification and treatment of psychiatric disorders to the audience. We are proposing to revise all chapters with an eye on accuracy and ease of use, and this is an especially timely endeavor with the upcoming publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual V. All the appropriate new information on biology, etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders will be added to the current proposed edition. It is our goal to recruit the same authors (if possible) who contributed to the previous edition. While all chapters will be updated (see TOC), those marked by asterisks will be the most likely to undergo more revision. Psychiatry has emerged as a burgeoning scientific field with major advances in etiology and treatment of several disorders. Just as there was excitement in the anatomic advances that took place a hundred years ago when Emil Kraepelin and his collaborators took on the enormous task of classification of psychiatric disorders based on rational scientific thinking, new advances in genetics, biochemistry, neuroanatomy and pharmacotherapy of mental disorders have brought us even closer to a better understanding of complex disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and even autism. The major goal of the previous edition of this classic book was to update the busy clinician, psychiatric resident and medical student with the most up-to-date information on etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. This goal remains the focus of the fourth edition of this book. In this updated and expanded edition, the reader will be provided with the most contemporary information and literature supported by a close survey of the field. This new edition of this classic title, with its focus on biologic and medical aspects of psychiatry, will continue to be of significant help to all interested in the scientific practice of psychiatry.

He gave his life for it, and said the gates of hell won’t prevail against it. Jesus himself is the foundation stone of this church. And Scripture tells us his glory and wisdom dwell in it. At Pentecost, he sent his Holy Spirit to establish the church. And he has gifted it with anointed servants — pastors, teachers, apostles, prophets and evangelists — for the purpose of building it up. It’s clear the Lord desires to bless his church. So, why does Revelation 2 present such a fearsome picture of Christ, when he appears to his people? John writes that Jesus comes to the church with flaming eyes and a thundering voice: “In the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man… His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow: and his eyes were as a flame of fire; and his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword” (Revelation 1:13-16). Now, Revelation is the summation of God’s Word. It describes the end of all things. And here is the first image of Christ we see in this book. Why does Jesus appear so foreboding here? And why does he speak so piercingly to his church? John writes that Christ’s words are as sharp as swords, cutting down to the marrow. Remember, this was the apostle who leaned his head on Jesus’ bosom. But now he finds himself on his face: “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead” (1:17). The Lord himself explains his awesome appearance: “All the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works” (2:23). The fact is, Christ loves his church. And that’s the very reason he comes to search it. He comes to correct his people in love, to purify them. First of all, Jesus tells John not to be afraid. “He laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last” (1:17). Then Christ says, in essence, “I want everyone in my church to know I’ve come to search their inner man. And I do it with eyes of fire and a thunder that shakes the soul. I won’t mince words — what I have to say will both pierce and heal. But I won’t allow any child of mine to continue in apathy or blindness. My eyes and mouth will pierce through every facade.” Christ saw something in his church. And he instructed John to write down his words and send them to the seven “angels” of the churches. This refers to his ministers, calling them the stars in his hands (see 1:16). He’s telling John, “I love these servants. I’ve called and anointed them. And now you’re to deliver my words to them.” As a pastor myself, I have to wonder: what must it have been like to open such a letter from John? “Unto the pastor of the church in New York: Thus saith the Lord, concerning your congregation…” Now imagine what those seven ministers felt. ………….. @ahavajerusalem #ahavajerusalem http://ahavajerusalem.com About David Wilkerson David Wilkerson was the Founding Pastor of Times Square Church in New York City. He was called to New York in 1958 to minister to gang members and drug addicts, as told in the best-selling book, The Cross and the Switchblade. In 1987, David Wilkerson returned to “the crossroads of the world” to establish Times Square Church. As a pastor of the church, he faithfully led this congregation, delivering powerful biblical messages that encourage righteous living and complete reliance on God. David Wilkerson had a strong burden to encourage and strengthen pastors throughout the world. From 1999 to 2008, he traveled around the globe holding conferences for Christian ministers.

These 5 Anxiety Symptoms Often Go Unnoticed

5 Signs Of Anxiety That Often Go Unnoticed 🔷🔷🔷 Anxiety is one of the biggest problems in modern society, and it’s estimated that most of the population suffers one or more symptoms related to it. However, in addition to the most common symptoms (tachycardia, sweating, chest pressure), there are other signs that we don’t register as being physical manifestations of a deeper problem. Here we show you the 5 symptoms of anxiety that we usually ignore. 📌 Bookmark Article: http://www.cleverly.me/five-anxiety-symptoms 📌 Save on Pinterest: https://bit.ly/2w9kiNM ➡️ Thanks for watching and don’t forget to subscribe for more DIY crafts & projects, genius life hacks, clever tips & tricks, valuable health hacks, and fun facts: https://www.youtube.com/cleverly_diy?sub_confirmation=1 *********************************************************************** 1. Metallic Flavor in the Mouth People with anxiety detect bitter and salty flavors at a stronger level. And because anxiety causes bacteria to grow more rapidly, the result is mild bleeding of the gums. While not noticeable to the naked eye, the metallic flavor is unmistakable. 2. Excessive Yawning According to a British study, cortisol—also known as the stress hormone—increases when we are anxious. Cortisol raises the body’s temperature and yawning is a way for the body to cool itself down. 3. Cold Feet When a human being senses danger, blood flow becomes concentrated in the heart and stomach. As a result, extremities—such as the feet—receive less blood and therefore become cold. 4. Nightmares Dreams can be manifestations of what’s going on in our subconscious. With anxiety, it can happen that we have more nightmares than usual. In that case, it’s necessary to pay attention. 5. Mental Fog Anxiety can also cause concentration problems. This is why it’s often referred to as “mental fog” or “brain fog,” because thoughts don’t seem real. Many things are happening in the mind at the same time, and so the person is not able to focus on just one thing. ****************************************************** Do you want to see more content like this? What A Panic Attack Really Looks Like | The Channel Mum Anxiety Series

This is the harrowing moment a mum suffers a full-on panic attack – as her children play innocently in the background. Can you relate to Sophie? Remember, you are not alone! The Channel Mum psychologist in residence, Emma Kenny, has put together an Anxiety Course and Toolkit that you can use to help better manage your anxiety. Parents particularly are vulnerable to suffering from anxiety, even if they have never had issues with mental health before. Our research has revealed that 85% of mums say they suffered from some form of anxiety or mental health issue while pregnant or since becoming a mum. More than half didn’t even get a warning that this could happen! In our research, we found that… – Three in ten mums have suffered at least one panic attack and more than a quarter of these have had multiple stress-related episodes. – 23 per cent have had a panic attack when their child was present. – Half of mums hide their attacks and have never told anyone they suffer. – Two in five worry they will be judged for having panic attacks while a quarter fear their children could be taken away if they admit to suffering. – The most common trigger for panic attacks is feeling ‘I can’t cope’, suffered by 48 per cent of mums reporting attacks, alongside 37 per cent who fear ‘I’m not a good enough mum’. – The most experienced symptoms include being unable to breathe, suffered by seven in ten and 63 per cent who broke down crying uncontrollably. – Three in five describe the feeling as ‘overwhelming dread’ with 22 per cent even contemplating suicide.
