Even today their sermons remain burned in my memory: “The Bible says Christ will come like a thief in the night, when you least expect him. It will happen in the twinkling of an eye, with the sound of a trumpet. You must be ready at all times.” The powerful cry, “Jesus is coming!” is seldom heard in God’s house today. Very few Christians live with a sense of expectancy, looking and yearning for Jesus’ return. How has this happened? The New Testament gives many warnings that mockers will appear in the last days, ridiculing the doctrine of Christ’s coming. Peter writes, “There shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation” (2 Peter 3:3-4). This mocking can be heard today: “What does anyone have to fear? All things continue just as they always have. There is no reason to fear a Judgment Day, because it simply isn’t coming.”The devil has whispered a different lie into the ears of many believers. That lie is, “Christ has delayed his coming.” Jesus addresses this in Matthew 24 in his parable about being ready for his return: “Be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. “But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to smite his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 24:45-51). Jesus is speaking here about believers, identifying them as servants. One of these servants is faithful while the other is evil. What makes the second servant evil in the Lord’s eyes? According to Jesus, it is something “he shall say in his heart” — that “the Lord delays his coming.” In other words, he’s convinced Jesus won’t come suddenly or unexpectedly. He has been instructed to “watch,” to “be ready,” “for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not” (Luke 12:40). But instead this servant eases his conscience by believing Satan’s lie. Once he accepts the devil’s lie, here is the fruit: Because he sees no need to watch for Christ’s coming, he doesn’t see any need to make peace with his fellow servants. There is no need to preserve unity at home, at work, in the church, no need to make things right with others. Instead, he feels he could “smite his fellow servants,” accusing them, holding grudges and destroying others’ reputations. This servant seeks only to play, to have pleasure, to live with no conscience. In short, he wants both Jesus and the world. …© 2012 World Challenge. All rights reserved. HIDDEN FEARS That same day, a New York City police officer spoke to me about the uncertainty and alarm within the police force and fire departments. Their macho exteriors hid secret fears because most of them had lost friends during the 9/11 attacks. Even now, years later, each time some New Yorkers travel through tunnels and over bridges they hold their breath and pray for protection. A stalled vehicle can cause panic. The greatest fear that haunts this city is a suitcase bomb, carrying nuclear or germ capabilities. Many people began carrying small gas masks. The citizenry seem to be resigned to the inevitable, believing an attack of major proportions will eventually strike. No one knows when, but the thought hangs heavily over the populace. A SOURCE OF HELP Yet there is not fear among true believers. Instead, we want to be available should an attack come, to help in the time of crisis. This is how our church has prepared our people. In the midst of theses apprehensive times, the Spirit of God is moving in a marvelous way. Many are coming to Christ throughout New York City, and there is an increasing hunger for God among young people. May this be the heart attitude of all God’s servants in these days of apprehension and fear. While he was in London, he stayed at a friend’s flat on Baker Street. It was in that apartment on Baker Street that Gerry wrote a deeply emotive and introspective narrative about a man that “drinks all night” to “forget about everything”, and dreams “about buying some land, giving up the booze & the one night stands- to settle down in a quiet little town.” The song Baker Street is one of the epics of the 70s, It’s as song that has been a fixture of Pop Culture from uses in Good Will Hunting to the Sopranos. Simply reading the lyric sheet of Rafferty’s tormenting catharsis makes “Baker Street” a bitingly powerful composition, but the sonic highlights of the track are perhaps even more arresting. “Winding your way down Baker Street- light in your head and dead on your feet.” It was just another crazy day in 1977, when the late Gerry Rafferty wrote that opening line of his seminal soft rock classic “Baker Street.” Gerry’s career was in a holding pattern following the breakup of Stealers Wheel, a band that he co-founded with his childhood chum Joe Egan. Gerry & Joe released a couple of singles as Stealers Wheel that stiffed before striking gold with “Stuck in the Middle With You” that was a #6 hit in America, and #8 hit in the UK in ’73. They had a mild follow-up hit with “Star” that stalled at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #25 in the UK.By 1975, Stealers Wheel had split up, and Rafferty & Egan wanted to move forward with their respective solo careers. However, the contract that they had signed with A&M Records prohibited them from releasing any music for three years. The dispute went to litigation, and was finally resolved in 1978, which cleared the path for City to City, Gerry Rafferty’s debut solo album that ended up selling over 6 million copies around the world.It was a painfully stressful 3 years for Gerry Rafferty, but amidst the adversity, he wrote one of the most epic songs of the Rock Era. “Baker Street” was all about the frustration that Rafferty was feeling from the legal battles to free himself from the Stealers Wheel contract. He spent a lot of time going back and forth from Glasgow, Scotland to London, England to meet with his lawyers, and while he was in London, he stayed at a friend’s flat on Baker Street. It was in that apartment on Baker Street that Gerry wrote a deeply emotive and introspective narrative about a man that “drinks all night” to “forget about everything”, and dreams “about buying some land, giving up the booze & the one night stands- to settle down in a quiet little town.” A thought I’ve had too many times to mention and I”m sure we all have felt at one time or another. It’s a depressing ending, but the most worthy and fitting finale for the character and the show. The song is the key. Baker Street in just a few notes can convey so many emotions, Fear, loathing, regret, desolation, as well as hope and faith for a better tomorrow.Considering the challenges that Gerry Rafferty overcame to release his solo material, and write this song and gift it to the masses, it would’ve been poetic for“Baker Street” to not only hit #1 but also win every award given that year.Thank you Gerry for this uncompromising and legendary compositions.
