Pat once famously quipped “most chick singers say if you hurt me, I’ll die… I say, if you hurt me, I’ll kick your ass.”#4- “Invincible” The Grammy nominated single that was the first release off Pat’s 6th studio album Seven the Hard Way. It was also used as the theme song for the 1985 film The Legend of Billie Jean starring Helen Slater. Here’s the story of how the song was written and presented for Pat & Neil by the tune’s primary lyricist Holly Knight. “Invincible” was another Top 10 smash for Pat Benatar #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 #4 Mainstream Rock #6 in Canada#3- “Hell is For Children” A choice cut from the blockbuster 1980 LP Crimes of Passion. “Hell is For Children” is not just a cool album track…it is a Benatar/ Giraldo rock manifesto.#2- “We Belong” The lead single for Top 40 radio play from Tropico in ’84. On any other day this would be my #1. Now WE all know that Pat can belt out a vocal that goes far beyond her petite frame, that’s a fact, but “We Belong” demonstrates her sweet versatility.On this song it’s like she’s going back to her young roots when she used to captivate audiences by singing a Judy Garland number. Her vocals here are absolutely transfixing.Pat sings “We Belong,” a tale about a woman trying to rise above petty differences to save a relationship, with the perfect blend of sensitivity and emphasis.Myron performed on 9 Benatar albums.And, like Neil Giraldo, was a recruit from the Rick Derringer band. “We Belong” was one of Pat Benatar’s biggest hits: #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 #3 Mainstream Rock #8 on Canada #7 in Australia & New Zealand and it’s no surprise. IT’s such a feel good song. It’s one of those classic 80s songs that will live on forever because it defines the era it came from. It’s a perfect song. Especially this part:#1- “Love is a Battlefield” This song represents everything we love about Pat Benatar. Her ability to communicate to her audience with that towering voice, inspiring strength and empowerment, for all types of human beings. “Love is a Battlefield” was not written by Pat, or Neil, but they took a Holly Knight/ Mike Chapman collaboration, originally intended to be a touching ballad, and turned it into a rebellious battle cry. Prince was to play the part of ’The Kid’, a talented, yet troubled singer growing up in a dysfunctional family, with a contemptuous relationship with his father who physically batters his mother.’The Kid’ loses his love, played by Vanity 6 star Apollonia, to his rival, portrayed by Morris Day from Morris Day & The Time. Purple Rain was conceived as a cinematic vehicle to showcase the brilliance of Prince- essentially breaking him into worldwide super stardom.The film was to be directed by first time director Albert Magnoli. Amazingly, Prior to Purple Rain, Magnoli only had one acclaimed short film to his credit that he shot as a film student. Magnoli & William Blinn took notes from Prince for several months to write the screenplay for Purple Rain.Prince had finished what he thought was ALL the music that was needed for Purple Rain, but Magnoli surprised him with an urgent phone call asking Prince to compose one more song that would match an important montage in the movie that intersected the protagonist’s parental difficulties and a troubling love affair. We’ve talked the last few days about history being different depending on who’s eyes were seeing it through. One story is that Albert Magnoli request the song, another is suggested in the definitive book about this period, Diane Tudahl’s Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions.She talks about how Prince was nominated for several grammy awards in 1983 for 1999 and lost both to Michael Jackson Thriller and that Prince, potentially humbled by the loss, the next few days in that period of time, that Prince could possibly have been inspired to work on something more introspective and that might’ve been a catalyst to work on what many consider to be the most personal song of his career. This was in early 1984.. So apparently, Prince quickly tapped into another dimension of creativity that few mortals had access to. As we all are aware, he was otherworldly. A genius on levels even geniuses marvel at…Prince had remarkably finished two songs to present to Magnoli. One of the songs was a track Prince was particularly proud of called “When Doves Cry. “When Doves Cry” is a metaphor for the disruption of the tranquility & harmony of love. A dove being a symbol of peace. When two people fight with each other, it disturbs that peace, and that is when doves cry- with a soft lamenting coo.

Giving away the secrets behind the great rocker from 1988, Kiss Me Deadly by the Goddess of Metal, Lita Ford. Lita of course started out as a member of the Runaways in the 70s and then went solo and stormed the charts in the latter part of the 80s with her platinum plus ironic album LITA. Let’s be clear. Benny Mardones. We at Professor of Rock along with so many of you mourn the loss of this tender soul, who’s hit “Into the Night” charted 3 different times on the charts, including twice in the 80s. We covered this song in the inaugural episode of Number One in our Hearts, because it absolutely should’ve been a number one hit. I still maintain that Benny’s vocal performance for those few moments could go toe to toe with any voice on any song in music history. We were so fortunate to spend a few hours talking to Benny about his songs, his career and most of all, getting to know him as a human being.. It’s one of my favorite interviews. Since then we’ve had some wonderful correspondences over the years. Anyone who knew Benny can attest to the fact that Benny was humble, sweet, extremely caring, and deeply proud of the music he created. He really loved music and his fans. Most of all, Benny was a fighter. We’ve lost some great ones in music lately, and that’s why sharing this history is so important. That’s why sharing these songs and artists with our kids and their kids is paramount. We’re just never going to see artists and songs like these again. I hope I’m wrong. I really do. Several years earlier Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson the voice and guitar respectively of the hall of fame group were coming off a mini comeback. After taking the world by storm in the mid 70s with the albums Dreamboat Annie, little queen, and Dog and Butterfly the band entered the 80s with the rocking Bebele strange that went to the top 5 on the album charts while the lead single from that album even it up peaked at 33 on the hot 100. From there the next few studio albums sold less and less.The band was in the midst of a slump with 1982’s private edition and 1983 passion works falling short of commercial expectations and the singles from those records languished outside of the top twenty. With the advent of MTV and the popularity of the synth in the neon decade the suits at the label started to push rockers Ann and Nancy a new direction .Ann and Nancy having written the majority of their output up to that point were pushed to record outside writers music as well as collaborate with many of these writers. This resulted in immediate commercial success. In 1985 Heart’s self titled lp went to #1 their only album up to this point to do so. The album contained 4 top ten hits including the number one smash These Dreams. Leading to the release of Bad Animals which continued the commercial success. I had a chance to talk to Ann Wilson about this period in the 80s when they were stuggling commercially up to the point of success, including the story behind their number one hit Alone. Today the Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar tells us how he joined Van Halen and the resulting Music. He also tells the story behind creating the game changing song Dreams, the second single from their 1986 album 5150 which was the first Van Halen album to go to #1. The album 5150 is named after Eddie Van Halen’s studio. 5150, sold a million copies in it’s first week. Think about that for a second. The last few years, there have only been a couple of artists or albums that have sold 1 million copies over an entire year!
