You CAN change the future, but first you’ve got to want to.”Words of wisdom from the diminutive rock icon with the gigantic voice……the incomparable Pat Benatar. Pat Benatar’s rise to stardom is a narrative of relentless pursuit, and a heartwarming story of romantic alchemy Once Pat Benatar knew what she wanted, she was fearless- scratching and clawing her way to becoming one of the most influential artists of the rock era. #5- From 1980…. “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” Arguably the song that Pat is most associated with. Pat once famously quipped “most chick singers say if you hurt me, I’ll die… I say, if you hurt me, I’ll kick your ass.” #4- “Invincible” The Grammy nominated single that was the first release off Pat’s 6th studio album Seven the Hard Way. It was also used as the theme song for the 1985 film The Legend of Billie Jean starring Helen Slater. Here’s the story of how the song was written and presented for Pat & Neil by the tune’s primary lyricist Holly Knight. “Invincible” was another Top 10 smash for Pat Benatar #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 #4 Mainstream Rock #6 in Canada #3- “Hell is For Children” A choice cut from the blockbuster 1980 LP Crimes of Passion. “Hell is For Children” is not just a cool album track…it is a Benatar/ Giraldo rock manifesto. #2- “We Belong” The lead single for Top 40 radio play from Tropico in ’84. On any other day this would be my #1. Now WE all know that Pat can belt out a vocal that goes far beyond her petite frame, that’s a fact, but “We Belong” demonstrates her sweet versatility. On this song it’s like she’s going back to her young roots when she used to captivate audiences by singing a Judy Garland number. Her vocals here are absolutely transfixing. Pat sings “We Belong,” a tale about a woman trying to rise above petty differences to save a relationship, with the perfect blend of sensitivity and emphasis. Myron performed on 9 Benatar albums. And, like Neil Giraldo, was a recruit from the Rick Derringer band. “We Belong” was one of Pat Benatar’s biggest hits: #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 #3 Mainstream Rock #8 on Canada #7 in Australia & New Zealand and it’s no surprise. IT’s such a feel good song. It’s one of those classic 80s songs that will live on forever because it defines the era it came from. It’s a perfect song. Especially this part: #1- “Love is a Battlefield” This song represents everything we love about Pat Benatar. Her ability to communicate to her audience with that towering voice, inspiring strength and empowerment, for all types of human beings. “Love is a Battlefield” was not written by Pat, or Neil, but they took a Holly Knight/ Mike Chapman collaboration, originally intended to be a touching ballad, and turned it into a rebellious battle cry. Here is co-author Holly Knight with some of the story:

Lita Ford on the Story Behind 80s Rocker Kiss Me Deadly | Pop Fix | Professor of Rock

Giving away the secrets behind the great rocker from 1988, Kiss Me Deadly by the Goddess of Metal, Lita Ford. Hey Music Junkies, the Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time with our latest edition of Pop Fix. Lita of course started out as a member of the Runaways in the 70s and then went solo and stormed the charts in the latter part of the 80s with her platinum plus ironic album LITA. Let’s be clear. The Lita album cover was to adolescent males in the 80s what that Farrah Fawcett poster was to Adolescent males in the 70s. Kiss Me Deadly was a genre bender that spoke to a range of music listeners, hitting #12 on the billboard hot 100, and along with her awesome duet with Ozzy Close my Eyes Forever gave Lita a ferocious one-two punch in the last two years of the 80s. Today I want to go behind a great rocker from 1988. One that to this day still gets my heart pumping. Kiss Me Deadly by the Goddess of Metal Lita Ford. How Angus Young & Bon Scott Created the Blue Print for AC DC’s Future | Professor of Rock

One night brothers Angus Young and Malcolm Young were jamming in the studio after hours… when suddenly Angus had an idea for a riff that he immediately played. The Riff would change everything for AC/DC: Highway to Hell produced by Mutt Lange and sung by Bon Scott broke the band in America for good. the story is next. IN the grand scheme of things bands come and go. One day they’re on top another day their being dropped by their label but when the dust settles and 40 or 50 years pass by, we see who the real titans of music are, who has and will stand the test of time beyond the flavor of the week or even a few big album. With that in mind, there is no question that AC/DC has endured as much as any band in rock history. Metallica, U2, Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Journey, Fleetwood Mac even the Rolling Stones all stand behind AC/DC in terms of record sales in the US. AC/DC is essentially tied with Pink Floyd and only the Beatles Led Zeppelin and the Eagles are ahead in terms of rock groups. Worldwide AC/DC is in the top 20 when you consider all artists. When you take into account the biggest selling album of all time AC/DC Back in Black is the third best selling album ever on this planet, Just behind Michael Jackson thriller and Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. I always say that If an alien from another world wanted to know what Rock and Roll is I’d just play him AC/DC or Van Halen. Which takes me to the subject of today’s video. If you had to define AC/DC by one song… Dial it down to one riff that captures their essence what would it be? TO me the song and the riff that led to Back in Black, the epitomizes their sound to the masses and that influenced so many who came after, you’d be hard pressed to find something better than Highway to Hell. This riff is seismic. It’s absolutely galactic. When the band started working on the sessions for Highway to Hell, their last album with the legendary front man Bon Scott they had released five album globally, with really no support from radio in America they had designs on making it in the states. They were coming off the live album If You Want Blood and their last studio album was Powerage from 1977 which built upon their hard rock bluesy sound. they were ready for their closeup. Up to that point their album had been produced by brother George Young and Harry Vanda, who were name checked in Dire Straits’ song Sultans of Swing. George and Harry had produced everything form High Voltage on up… Well the band’s label Atlantic Records who had rejected their 1976 album Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap were of the belief that ACDC was ready to blow up in America but felt that the band needed a different producer at the helm. The band members were against this. Out of loyalty to their brother and friend.

How This Classic Rock Song Saved Kiss | Professor of Rock

The first three studio albums by KISS, the band that taught us how to rock, were commercial disappointments. Their record label was circling the drain. It was a desperate time for Paul Stanley & Gene Simmons to create a song that would vault their band to superstardom and keep the band going. The story of KISS’s signature song, Rock and Roll All Nite, a song that should’ve been a number one single NEXT on Professor of Rock. The most notorious live act of the Rock Era was arguably KISS- the band that taught us how to rock. As the slogan sounded before KISS hit the stage at all of their concerts…”you wanted the best- you got the best!” The iconic foursome of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss pioneered the spectacle of pyrotechnic & costume rock on a riveting stage of shooting rockets, exploding bombs, fire-breathing, blood spewing, levitating drums, and smoking guitars. The KISS army actually started building with an audience of less than 10 people that attended their first live performance at the old Popcorn Club in Queens, New York. KISS was paid a paltry $50 to perform two sets that night. They got the gig after Gene Simmons cold-called the venue booker, convincing him to hire the band for a 3 night stand. The 4 members of KISS each wore make-up for the 3 inaugural shows in Queens, but their signature facial character designs were not unveiled until a few months later at a concert at the Daisy in Amityville, New York. On the strength of their wild live set, the KISS army swelled- with a cult-like following, especially in the northeastern section of the Midwest America called the Rust Belt. On the strength of their wild live set, KISS was signed to Casablanca Records, and dropped their eponymous debut album in ’74. The self-titled KISS album did not have a hit single, and rose only as high as #87 on the Billboard 200, despite growing significance as a bad ass touring entity. KISS’s follow-up album, Hotter Than Hell, released later that same year, was an even bigger disappointment, peaking at 100, and quickly dropped off the charts. Meanwhile, Casablanca Records was in deep deep trouble. The leader of Casablanca, Neil Bogart & his minions, made some colossal blunders that nearly ruined the label, including the release of a double-album of audio highlights from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. That package was a disaster that affected every act signed to Casablanca, including KISS. KISS was the first act to be signed by Casablanca, but the company was primarily known as a disco label- with acts like Donna Summer, Cher, Lipps, Inc and the Village People. It was an inauspicious home for a future hall of fame rock band. The lukewarm sales of Hotter Than Hell, and the overall insolvency of the label put Casablanca’s leader, Neil Bogart on the offensive.

Interview Anyone In History? Dan Fogelberg | 3 Songs | The Professor of Rock

Hey There Music Junkies, The Professor of Rock here with your latest Pop Fix. This week we drop the needle on 3 songs from Dan Fogelberg. In my opinion Dan Fogelberg has the most sincere voice out of any generation. When the song called for deeply intense emotion, He would answer, every time. In reference to the song “Longer” Dan said “I was lounging in a hammock one night, looking up at the stars, it just seems that this song was drifting around the universe, it saw me and decided I’d give it a good home”. This quote provides such a testament to Dan’s humility and sincerity. Highly respected session player, Jerry Hey, gives us his take on spending time with Dan Fogelberg in the studio. Also if you want to support our mission of curating the best of the rock era become a patron, Today we zero in on a song that is number one in our hearts; Gerry Rafferty spent a lot of time going back and forth from Glasgow, Scotland to London, England to meet with his lawyers when he was in the middle of a lawsuit with his former label and wasn’t able to record for 3 years. While he was in London, he stayed at a friend’s flat on Baker Street. It was in that apartment on Baker Street that Gerry wrote a deeply emotive and introspective narrative about a man that “drinks all night” to “forget about everything”, and dreams “about buying some land, giving up the booze & the one night stands- to settle down in a quiet little town.” The song Baker Street is one of the epics of the 70s, It’s as song that has been a fixture of Pop Culture from uses in Good Will Hunting to the Sopranos. Simply reading the lyric sheet of Rafferty’s tormenting catharsis makes “Baker Street” a bitingly powerful composition, but the sonic highlights of the track are perhaps even more arresting. “Winding your way down Baker Street- light in your head and dead on your feet.” It was just another crazy day in 1977, when the late Gerry Rafferty wrote that opening line of his seminal soft rock classic “Baker Street.” Gerry’s career was in a holding pattern following the breakup of Stealers Wheel, a band that he co-founded with his childhood chum Joe Egan. Gerry & Joe released a couple of singles as Stealers Wheel that stiffed before striking gold with “Stuck in the Middle With You” that was a #6 hit in America, and #8 hit in the UK in ’73. They had a mild follow-up hit with “Star” that stalled at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #25 in the UK. By 1975, Stealers Wheel had split up, and Rafferty & Egan wanted to move forward with their respective solo careers. However, the contract that they had signed with A&M Records prohibited them from releasing any music for three years. The dispute went to litigation, and was finally resolved in 1978, which cleared the path for City to City, Gerry Rafferty’s debut solo album that ended up selling over 6 million copies around the world. It was a painfully stressful 3 years for Gerry Rafferty, but amidst the adversity, he wrote one of the most epic songs of the Rock Era. “Baker Street” was all about the frustration that Rafferty was feeling from the legal battles to free himself from the Stealers Wheel contract. He spent a lot of time going back and forth from Glasgow, Scotland to London, England to meet with his lawyers, and while he was in London, he stayed at a friend’s flat on Baker Street. It was in that apartment on Baker Street that Gerry wrote a deeply emotive and introspective narrative about a man that “drinks all night” to “forget about everything”, and dreams “about buying some land, giving up the booze & the one night stands- to settle down in a quiet little town.” A thought I’ve had too many times to mention and I”m sure we all have felt at one time or another. It’s a depressing ending, but the most worthy and fitting finale for the character and the show. The song is the key. Baker Street in just a few notes can convey so many emotions, Fear, loathing, regret, desolation, as well as hope and faith for a better tomorrow. Considering the challenges that Gerry Rafferty overcame to release his solo material, and write this song and gift it to the masses, it would’ve been poetic for“Baker Street” to not only hit #1 but also win every award given that year. Thank you Gerry for this uncompromising and legendary compositions. Leave us a comment about Gerry Rafferty and this wonderful song. Benny Mardones. We at Professor of Rock along with so many of you mourn the loss of this tender soul, who’s hit “Into the Night” charted 3 different times on the charts, including twice in the 80s. We covered this song in the inaugural episode of Number One in our Hearts, because it absolutely should’ve been a number one hit. I still maintain that Benny’s vocal performance for those few moments could go toe to toe with any voice on any song in music history. We were so fortunate to spend a few hours talking to Benny about his songs, his career and most of all, getting to know him as a human being.. It’s one of my favorite interviews. Since then we’ve had some wonderful correspondences over the years. Anyone who knew Benny can attest to the fact that Benny was humble, sweet, extremely caring, and deeply proud of the music he created. He really loved music and his fans. Most of all, Benny was a fighter. We’ve lost some great ones in music lately, and that’s why sharing this history is so important. That’s why sharing these songs and artists with our kids and their kids is paramount. We’re just never going to see artists and songs like these again. I hope I’m wrong. I really do. Here is the story of Benny’s tremendous smash hit Into The Night from Benny himself. We love you Benny. Thank you for the music
