Pat once famously quipped “most chick singers say if you hurt me, I’ll die… I say, if you hurt me, I’ll kick your ass.”#4- “Invincible” The Grammy nominated single that was the first release off Pat’s 6th studio album Seven the Hard Way. It was also used as the theme song for the 1985 film The Legend of Billie Jean starring Helen Slater. Here’s the story of how the song was written and presented for Pat & Neil by the tune’s primary lyricist Holly Knight. “Invincible” was another Top 10 smash for Pat Benatar #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 #4 Mainstream Rock #6 in Canada#3- “Hell is For Children” A choice cut from the blockbuster 1980 LP Crimes of Passion. “Hell is For Children” is not just a cool album track…it is a Benatar/ Giraldo rock manifesto.#2- “We Belong” The lead single for Top 40 radio play from Tropico in ’84. On any other day this would be my #1. Now WE all know that Pat can belt out a vocal that goes far beyond her petite frame, that’s a fact, but “We Belong” demonstrates her sweet versatility.On this song it’s like she’s going back to her young roots when she used to captivate audiences by singing a Judy Garland number. Her vocals here are absolutely transfixing.Pat sings “We Belong,” a tale about a woman trying to rise above petty differences to save a relationship, with the perfect blend of sensitivity and emphasis.Myron performed on 9 Benatar albums.And, like Neil Giraldo, was a recruit from the Rick Derringer band. “We Belong” was one of Pat Benatar’s biggest hits: #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 #3 Mainstream Rock #8 on Canada #7 in Australia & New Zealand and it’s no surprise. IT’s such a feel good song. It’s one of those classic 80s songs that will live on forever because it defines the era it came from. It’s a perfect song. Especially this part:#1- “Love is a Battlefield” This song represents everything we love about Pat Benatar. Her ability to communicate to her audience with that towering voice, inspiring strength and empowerment, for all types of human beings. “Love is a Battlefield” was not written by Pat, or Neil, but they took a Holly Knight/ Mike Chapman collaboration, originally intended to be a touching ballad, and turned it into a rebellious battle cry. After sending some demos to Beatles Manager Brian Epstein, He passed them on to a friend. In 1967 Robert Stigwood, the freshly retained manager of The Bee Gees, arranged a multi-album deal with Polydor Records in the UK.#5) From 1975… “Jive Talkin”: The song that marked the reinvention of The Bee Gees- relinquishing their typecast as a “ballad band” and blasting into a renaissance that overshadowed whatever anyone thought of The Bee Gees before ’75. The original title for the tune was “Drive Talking”, but famed producer Arif Mardin, who was working with the band on their Main Course album, suggested that song’s title be changed to “Jive Talkin” to tap into a hip vernacular.#4) Whacha doin’ on your back?… “You Should Be Dancing”- The Bee Gees third #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and the lead single from their Children of the World LP in ’76. It’s unquestionably heavier than your typical sugar-sweet pop ballad with an inspired lyrical pathos- from the Gibb songwriting genius: “How can you mend a broken heart. How can you stop the rain from falling down.”“How can a loser every win?”#2) From 1977- one of the most popular jams of all time…”Stayin Alive.”If you’ve seen the movie Saturday Night Fever, it’s hard to hear “Stayin Alive” without picturing John Travolta’s character walking down a street in Brooklyn, New York: Barry in a brash falsetto singing the opening line “Well you can tell by the way I use my walk, I’m a woman’s man, no time to talk.”#1) From 1977…. “How Deep is Your Love”Another beloved track from the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack, and one of the few cuts that wasn’t a dance number.“How Deep is Your Love” is a gorgeously elegant endearment. “I believe in you You know the door to my very soul You’re the light in my deepest, darkest hour You’re my savior when I fall.”

In 1978 one of the greatest duets of the era was released, the top 5 hit Whenever I call you friend between two of the greatest voices of any era, Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks. Hey Music Junkies, the Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time with our latest edition of Pop Fix. Kenny and Stevie’s voices together are smoother than silk. Which is why this song is not only one of the great duets of the time, it’s also a yacht rock classic and though Stevie is credited on the album track, she was strangely not credited on the actual single, which makes Whenever I Call You “Friend”, Loggins’ first major solo hit.. “Whenever I Call You Friend” was written by Kenny and another multi-platinum artist from the time Melissa Manchester. As the slogan sounded before KISS hit the stage at all of their concerts…”you wanted the best- you got the best!” The iconic foursome of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss pioneered the spectacle of pyrotechnic & costume rock on a riveting stage of shooting rockets, exploding bombs, fire-breathing, blood spewing, levitating drums, and smoking guitars. The KISS army actually started building with an audience of less than 10 people that attended their first live performance at the old Popcorn Club in Queens, New York.KISS was paid a paltry $50 to perform two sets that night. They got the gig after Gene Simmons cold-called the venue booker, convincing him to hire the band for a 3 night stand. The 4 members of KISS each wore make-up for the 3 inaugural shows in Queens, but their signature facial character designs were not unveiled until a few months later at a concert at the Daisy in Amityville, New York.On the strength of their wild live set, the KISS army swelled- with a cult-like following, especially in the northeastern section of the Midwest America called the Rust Belt. On the strength of their wild live set, KISS was signed to Casablanca Records, and dropped their eponymous debut album in ’74. The self-titled KISS album did not have a hit single, and rose only as high as #87 on the Billboard 200, despite growing significance as a bad ass touring entity. KISS’s follow-up album, Hotter Than Hell, released later that same year, was an even bigger disappointment, peaking at 100, and quickly dropped off the charts.Meanwhile, Casablanca Records was in deep deep trouble. The leader of Casablanca, Neil Bogart & his minions, made some colossal blunders that nearly ruined the label, including the release of a double-album of audio highlights from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. That package was a disaster that affected every act signed to Casablanca, including KISS.KISS was the first act to be signed by Casablanca, but the company was primarily known as a disco label- with acts like Donna Summer, Cher, Lipps, Inc and the Village People. It was an inauspicious home for a future hall of fame rock band. The lukewarm sales of Hotter Than Hell, and the overall insolvency of the label put Casablanca’s leader, Neil Bogart on the offensive.

Ann Wilson of Heart on Story of How Alone Became an 80s #1 Hit | Premium | Professor of Rock

The band Heart, had some low points in the early 80s, after major success in the 70s. Ann Wilson the singer of this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band tells the story of making some sacrifices in the 80s that led to commercial success and the multi-platinum album from 1987, Bad Animals. Several years earlier Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson the voice and guitar respectively of the hall of fame group were coming off a mini comeback. After taking the world by storm in the mid 70s with the albums Dreamboat Annie, little queen, and Dog and Butterfly the band entered the 80s with the rocking Bebele strange that went to the top 5 on the album charts while the lead single from that album even it up peaked at 33 on the hot 100. From there the next few studio albums sold less and less.The band was in the midst of a slump with 1982’s private edition and 1983 passion works falling short of commercial expectations and the singles from those records languished outside of the top twenty. With the advent of MTV and the popularity of the synth in the neon decade the suits at the label started to push rockers Ann and Nancy a new direction .Ann and Nancy having written the majority of their output up to that point were pushed to record outside writers music as well as collaborate with many of these writers. This resulted in immediate commercial success. In 1985 Heart’s self titled lp went to #1 their only album up to this point to do so. The album contained 4 top ten hits including the number one smash These Dreams. Leading to the release of Bad Animals which continued the commercial success. I had a chance to talk to Ann Wilson about this period in the 80s when they were stuggling commercially up to the point of success, including the story behind their number one hit Alone.
