Pat Benatar’s rise to stardom is a narrative of relentless pursuit, and a heartwarming story of romantic alchemy Once Pat Benatar knew what she wanted, she was fearless- scratching and clawing her way to becoming one of the most influential artists of the rock era. #5- From 1980…. “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” Arguably the song that Pat is most associated with. Pat once famously quipped “most chick singers say if you hurt me, I’ll die… I say, if you hurt me, I’ll kick your ass.” #4- “Invincible” The Grammy nominated single that was the first release off Pat’s 6th studio album Seven the Hard Way. It was also used as the theme song for the 1985 film The Legend of Billie Jean starring Helen Slater. Here’s the story of how the song was written and presented for Pat & Neil by the tune’s primary lyricist Holly Knight. “Invincible” was another Top 10 smash for Pat Benatar #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 #4 Mainstream Rock #6 in Canada #3- “Hell is For Children” A choice cut from the blockbuster 1980 LP Crimes of Passion. “Hell is For Children” is not just a cool album track…it is a Benatar/ Giraldo rock manifesto. #2- “We Belong” The lead single for Top 40 radio play from Tropico in ’84. On any other day this would be my #1. Now WE all know that Pat can belt out a vocal that goes far beyond her petite frame, that’s a fact, but “We Belong” demonstrates her sweet versatility. On this song it’s like she’s going back to her young roots when she used to captivate audiences by singing a Judy Garland number. Her vocals here are absolutely transfixing. Pat sings “We Belong,” a tale about a woman trying to rise above petty differences to save a relationship, with the perfect blend of sensitivity and emphasis. Myron performed on 9 Benatar albums.And, like Neil Giraldo, was a recruit from the Rick Derringer band. “We Belong” was one of Pat Benatar’s biggest hits: #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 #3 Mainstream Rock #8 on Canada #7 in Australia & New Zealand and it’s no surprise. IT’s such a feel good song. It’s one of those classic 80s songs that will live on forever because it defines the era it came from. It’s a perfect song. Especially this part: #1- “Love is a Battlefield” This song represents everything we love about Pat Benatar. Her ability to communicate to her audience with that towering voice, inspiring strength and empowerment, for all types of human beings. “Love is a Battlefield” was not written by Pat, or Neil, but they took a Holly Knight/ Mike Chapman collaboration, originally intended to be a touching ballad, and turned it into a rebellious battle cry. The Bee Gees reaction: 3 brothers that went from a Skiffle Rock band as adolescents, to becoming the most successful family group of the Rock Era.Eldest brother Barry, and fraternal twins Robin & Maurice Gibb. After sending some demos to Beatles Manager Brian Epstein, He passed them on to a friend. In 1967 Robert Stigwood, the freshly retained manager of The Bee Gees, arranged a multi-album deal with Polydor Records in the UK. #5) From 1975… “Jive Talkin”: The song that marked the reinvention of The Bee Gees- relinquishing their typecast as a “ballad band” and blasting into a renaissance that overshadowed whatever anyone thought of The Bee Gees before ’75. The original title for the tune was “Drive Talking”, but famed producer Arif Mardin, who was working with the band on their Main Course album, suggested that song’s title be changed to “Jive Talkin” to tap into a hip vernacular. #4) Whacha doin’ on your back?… “You Should Be Dancing”- The Bee Gees third #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and the lead single from their Children of the World LP in ’76. Barry Gibb discovered that he could do some amazing things with his vocals while working on tracks for the Main Course album, and developed his iconic falsetto during those sessions.,Barry’s wild falsetto is in full effect on “You Should Be Dancing,” tethered by Robin’s midrange counterpoint, and Maurice’s uncanny harmony. #3) From 1971, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”- The Bee Gees first #1 pop hit on the Billboard Hot 100.Composed by Barry & Robin during their reunion writing sessions, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” is a classic masterpiece of forlorn anguish. It’s unquestionably heavier than your typical sugar-sweet pop ballad with an inspired lyrical pathos- from the Gibb songwriting genius: “How can you mend a broken heart. How can you stop the rain from falling down.”“How can a loser every win?” #2) From 1977- one of the most popular jams of all time…”Stayin Alive.”If you’ve seen the movie Saturday Night Fever, it’s hard to hear “Stayin Alive” without picturing John Travolta’s character walking down a street in Brooklyn, New York: Barry in a brash falsetto singing the opening line “Well you can tell by the way I use my walk, I’m a woman’s man, no time to talk.” #1) From 1977…. “How Deep is Your Love”Another beloved track from the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack, and one of the few cuts that wasn’t a dance number.“How Deep is Your Love” is a gorgeously elegant endearment. “I believe in you You know the door to my very soul You’re the light in my deepest, darkest hour You’re my savior when I fall.”

Giving away the secrets behind the great rocker from 1988, Kiss Me Deadly by the Goddess of Metal, Lita Ford. Hey Music Junkies, the Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time with our latest edition of Pop Fix. Lita of course started out as a member of the Runaways in the 70s and then went solo and stormed the charts in the latter part of the 80s with her platinum plus ironic album LITA. Let’s be clear. The Lita album cover was to adolescent males in the 80s what that Farrah Fawcett poster was to Adolescent males in the 70s. Kiss Me Deadly was a genre bender that spoke to a range of music listeners, hitting #12 on the billboard hot 100, and along with her awesome duet with Ozzy Close my Eyes Forever gave Lita a ferocious one-two punch in the last two years of the 80s. Benny Mardones. We at Professor of Rock along with so many of you mourn the loss of this tender soul, who’s hit “Into the Night” charted 3 different times on the charts, including twice in the 80s. We covered this song in the inaugural episode of Number One in our Hearts, because it absolutely should’ve been a number one hit. I still maintain that Benny’s vocal performance for those few moments could go toe to toe with any voice on any song in music history. We were so fortunate to spend a few hours talking to Benny about his songs, his career and most of all, getting to know him as a human being.. It’s one of my favorite interviews. Since then we’ve had some wonderful correspondences over the years. Anyone who knew Benny can attest to the fact that Benny was humble, sweet, extremely caring, and deeply proud of the music he created. He really loved music and his fans. Most of all, Benny was a fighter. We’ve lost some great ones in music lately, and that’s why sharing this history is so important. That’s why sharing these songs and artists with our kids and their kids is paramount. We’re just never going to see artists and songs like these again. I hope I’m wrong. I really do. Parsons became a regular at Abbey Road , engineering other great albums including Wings Red Rose Speedway and Wild life, five albums by the Hollies and of course Pink Floyd’s the Dark Side of the Moon.
