The song that propelled an artist to iconic superstardom began with an Eleventh Hour phone call from a newbie film director, and highlighted a surprise box office blockbuster in the theaters. Prince was to play the part of ’The Kid’, a talented, yet troubled singer growing up in a dysfunctional family, with a contemptuous relationship with his father who physically batters his mother.’The Kid’ loses his love, played by Vanity 6 star Apollonia, to his rival, portrayed by Morris Day from Morris Day & The Time. Purple Rain was conceived as a cinematic vehicle to showcase the brilliance of Prince- essentially breaking him into worldwide super stardom. The film was to be directed by first time director Albert Magnoli. Amazingly, Prior to Purple Rain, Magnoli only had one acclaimed short film to his credit that he shot as a film student. Magnoli & William Blinn took notes from Prince for several months to write the screenplay for Purple Rain.Prince had finished what he thought was ALL the music that was needed for Purple Rain, but Magnoli surprised him with an urgent phone call asking Prince to compose one more song that would match an important montage in the movie that intersected the protagonist’s parental difficulties and a troubling love affair. We’ve talked the last few days about history being different depending on who’s eyes were seeing it through. One story is that Albert Magnoli request the song, another is suggested in the definitive book about this period, Diane Tudahl’s Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions. She talks about how Prince was nominated for several grammy awards in 1983 for 1999 and lost both to Michael Jackson Thriller and that Prince, potentially humbled by the loss, the next few days in that period of time, that Prince could possibly have been inspired to work on something more introspective and that might’ve been a catalyst to work on what many consider to be the most personal song of his career. This was in early 1984.. So apparently, Prince quickly tapped into another dimension of creativity that few mortals had access to. As we all are aware, he was otherworldly. A genius on levels even geniuses marvel at…Prince had remarkably finished two songs to present to Magnoli. One of the songs was a track Prince was particularly proud of called “When Doves Cry. “When Doves Cry” is a metaphor for the disruption of the tranquility & harmony of love. A dove being a symbol of peace. When two people fight with each other, it disturbs that peace, and that is when doves cry- with a soft lamenting coo.

How Angus Young & Bon Scott Created the Blue Print for AC DC’s Future | Professor of Rock

One night brothers Angus Young and Malcolm Young were jamming in the studio after hours… when suddenly Angus had an idea for a riff that he immediately played. The Riff would change everything for AC/DC: Highway to Hell produced by Mutt Lange and sung by Bon Scott broke the band in America for good. the story is next.Thank you to this Episodes Sponsor, Zenni Optical Incredible Prices on New Glasses – https://bit.ly/ZenniOpticalShop —————————————————————————————————————————– Executive Producer Brandon FugalHonorary Producers Jason White, Monique McCartha, Greg Rutledge, Jack Mongan —————————————————————————————————————————–Check Out My Hand Picked Selection BelowProfessor’s 80s Store– 100 Best Selling Albums https://amzn.to/3h3qZX9 – Ultimate History of 80s Teen Movie https://amzn.to/3ifjdKQ – 80s to 90s VHS Video Cover Art https://amzn.to/2QXzmIX – Totally Awesome 80s A Lexicon https://amzn.to/3h4ilrk – Best In Ear Headphones (I Use These Every Day) https://amzn.to/2ZcTlIl—————————————————————————————————————————–Check Out The Professor of Rock Merch Store – http://bit.ly/ProfessorMerchAccess To Backstage Content Become a Patron – http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFanPurchase The Albums Help out the Channel by purchasing your albums through our links! One day they’re on top another day their being dropped by their label but when the dust settles and 40 or 50 years pass by, we see who the real titans of music are, who has and will stand the test of time beyond the flavor of the week or even a few big album. With that in mind, there is no question that AC/DC has endured as much as any band in rock history. Metallica, U2, Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Journey, Fleetwood Mac even the Rolling Stones all stand behind AC/DC in terms of record sales in the US.AC/DC is essentially tied with Pink Floyd and only the Beatles Led Zeppelin and the Eagles are ahead in terms of rock groups. Worldwide AC/DC is in the top 20 when you consider all artists. When you take into account the biggest selling album of all time AC/DC Back in Black is the third best selling album ever on this planet, Just behind Michael Jackson thriller and Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. I always say that If an alien from another world wanted to know what Rock and Roll is I’d just play him AC/DC or Van Halen. Which takes me to the subject of today’s video. If you had to define AC/DC by one song… Dial it down to one riff that captures their essence what would it be? TO me the song and the riff that led to Back in Black, the epitomizes their sound to the masses and that influenced so many who came after, you’d be hard pressed to find something better than Highway to Hell. This riff is seismic. It’s absolutely galactic. When the band started working on the sessions for Highway to Hell, their last album with the legendary front man Bon Scott they had released five album globally, with really no support from radio in America they had designs on making it in the states. They were coming off the live album If You Want Blood and their last studio album was Powerage from 1977 which built upon their hard rock bluesy sound. they were ready for their closeup. Up to that point their album had been produced by brother George Young and Harry Vanda, who were name checked in Dire Straits’ song Sultans of Swing. George and Harry had produced everything form High Voltage on up… Well the band’s label Atlantic Records who had rejected their 1976 album Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap were of the belief that ACDC was ready to blow up in America but felt that the band needed a different producer at the helm. The band members were against this. Out of loyalty to their brother and friend.

Story of Soft Rock 70s Hit Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty | #1 in our hearts | Professor of Rock

Also if you want to support our mission of curating the best of the rock era become a patron, Today we zero in on a song that is number one in our hearts;Gerry Rafferty spent a lot of time going back and forth from Glasgow, Scotland to London, England to meet with his lawyers when he was in the middle of a lawsuit with his former label and wasn’t able to record for 3 years. While he was in London, he stayed at a friend’s flat on Baker Street. It was in that apartment on Baker Street that Gerry wrote a deeply emotive and introspective narrative about a man that “drinks all night” to “forget about everything”, and dreams “about buying some land, giving up the booze & the one night stands- to settle down in a quiet little town.” The song Baker Street is one of the epics of the 70s, It’s as song that has been a fixture of Pop Culture from uses in Good Will Hunting to the Sopranos. Simply reading the lyric sheet of Rafferty’s tormenting catharsis makes “Baker Street” a bitingly powerful composition, but the sonic highlights of the track are perhaps even more arresting. “Winding your way down Baker Street- light in your head and dead on your feet.” It was just another crazy day in 1977, when the late Gerry Rafferty wrote that opening line of his seminal soft rock classic “Baker Street.” Gerry’s career was in a holding pattern following the breakup of Stealers Wheel, a band that he co-founded with his childhood chum Joe Egan. Gerry & Joe released a couple of singles as Stealers Wheel that stiffed before striking gold with “Stuck in the Middle With You” that was a #6 hit in America, and #8 hit in the UK in ’73. They had a mild follow-up hit with “Star” that stalled at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #25 in the UK.By 1975, Stealers Wheel had split up, and Rafferty & Egan wanted to move forward with their respective solo careers. However, the contract that they had signed with A&M Records prohibited them from releasing any music for three years. The dispute went to litigation, and was finally resolved in 1978, which cleared the path for City to City, Gerry Rafferty’s debut solo album that ended up selling over 6 million copies around the world. It was a painfully stressful 3 years for Gerry Rafferty, but amidst the adversity, he wrote one of the most epic songs of the Rock Era. “Baker Street” was all about the frustration that Rafferty was feeling from the legal battles to free himself from the Stealers Wheel contract. He spent a lot of time going back and forth from Glasgow, Scotland to London, England to meet with his lawyers, and while he was in London, he stayed at a friend’s flat on Baker Street. It was in that apartment on Baker Street that Gerry wrote a deeply emotive and introspective narrative about a man that “drinks all night” to “forget about everything”, and dreams “about buying some land, giving up the booze & the one night stands- to settle down in a quiet little town.” A thought I’ve had too many times to mention and I”m sure we all have felt at one time or another. It’s a depressing ending, but the most worthy and fitting finale for the character and the show. The song is the key. Baker Street in just a few notes can convey so many emotions, Fear, loathing, regret, desolation, as well as hope and faith for a better tomorrow.Considering the challenges that Gerry Rafferty overcame to release his solo material, and write this song and gift it to the masses, it would’ve been poetic for“Baker Street” to not only hit #1 but also win every award given that year.Thank you Gerry for this uncompromising and legendary compositions. Several years earlier Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson the voice and guitar respectively of the hall of fame group were coming off a mini comeback. After taking the world by storm in the mid 70s with the albums Dreamboat Annie, little queen, and Dog and Butterfly the band entered the 80s with the rocking Bebele strange that went to the top 5 on the album charts while the lead single from that album even it up peaked at 33 on the hot 100. From there the next few studio albums sold less and less. The band was in the midst of a slump with 1982’s private edition and 1983 passion works falling short of commercial expectations and the singles from those records languished outside of the top twenty. With the advent of MTV and the popularity of the synth in the neon decade the suits at the label started to push rockers Ann and Nancy a new direction .Ann and Nancy having written the majority of their output up to that point were pushed to record outside writers music as well as collaborate with many of these writers. This resulted in immediate commercial success. In 1985 Heart’s self titled lp went to #1 their only album up to this point to do so. The album contained 4 top ten hits including the number one smash These Dreams. Leading to the release of Bad Animals which continued the commercial success. I had a chance to talk to Ann Wilson about this period in the 80s when they were stuggling commercially up to the point of success, including the story behind their number one hit Alone.
