Written by two internationally recognized authorities in the field, it provides detailed information about seven principal disorders, including anxiety in the medically ill. For each disorder, the book covers diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, etiology and pathogenesis, clinical features, natural history, and differential diagnosis; and describes treatment approaches, both psychological and pharmacological. The authors have thoroughly surveyed the scientific literature of the past two decades, and have added insights from history, philosophy, and the arts. At once scholarly and clinically relevant, this is a definitive reference for psychiatrists at all levels. In this context, clinimetrics, the science of clinical measurements, provides unprecedented opportunities for psychosomatic assessment. This volume illustrates how this approach can be translated into everyday practice complementing and improving the medical interview. The most sensitive and reliable clinical methods are presented for evaluating specific psychosocial aspects of disease, i.e. childhood adversities, life events and chronic stress, lifestyle, sexual function, subclinical and affective disturbances, personality, illness behavior, well-being and family dynamics. Each chapter provides practical illustrations as to how crucial information can be obtained with specific methods individualized according to the patients’ needs. A hyperlink is provided to a website that contains many of the instruments assessed in the volume. This book enables the reader to understand the value of the psychosomatic approach in clinical practice. So begins one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War. The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. Somatoform Disorders

Medically unexplained somatic symptoms are problematic in psychiatry, primary care settings, and other clinical areas. The burden they impose on health-care systems constitutes a significant public health problem. At the international symposium “Rethinking Somatoform Disorders,” this problem was addressed by specialists working in somatoform disorders, psychiatric nosology, epidemiology, and biological and cross-cultural psychiatry. The meeting was the third of the Keio University International Symposia for Life Sciences and Medicine, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the World Psychiatric Association.
