Anxiety Disorders and Gender

Anxiety and related disorders are common conditions that disproportionately affect women. In this book, the epidemiology, psychobiology, diagnosis, evaluation, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy of major anxiety and related disorders are examined with special reference to the effects of gender and sex on clinical presentation and treatment. The conditions considered include generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder. In addition, the management of anxiety and related disorders during pregnancy and lactation are discussed. Two concluding chapters specifically address anxiety disorders in women and in men, summarizing key points for clinicians and researchers. The authors are leading clinicians, including both psychiatrists and psychologists, from around the globe.

Short-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

This book is an easy-to-use guide to short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy for early career practitioners and students of mental health. Written by an expert psychiatric educator, this book is meticulously designed to emphasize clarity and succinctness to facilitate quality training and practice. Developed in a reader-friendly voice, the text begins by introducing the theoretical underpinnings of psychodynamic psychotherapy. Topics include the principles of attachment theory, the dual system theory of emotion processing, decision theory, choice point analysis and a critical review of the research literature. The book then shifts its focus to a description in a manualized format of the objectives and tasks of each phase of therapy within the framework of the engagement, emotion-processing and termination phases. The book concludes with a chapter on psychodynamically informed clinical practice for non-psychotherapists. Short-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is the ultimate tool for the education of students, residents, trainees, and fellows in psychiatry, psychology, counseling, social work, and all other clinical mental health professions.

Pediatric Anxiety Epidemic: A New Approach to Treatment | Kathryn Boger | TEDxWalthamED

There’s an anxiety epidemic, and increasing numbers of kids are struggling to learn, connect, and thrive. These kids are falling off the developmental curve, and their anxiety is causing them to experiencing losses in relation to their academics, social life, and extracurriculars. While traditional interventions help some, many continue to suffer. We need to think outside the box about how to tackle this problem. One solution is to increase the “dose” of outpatient treatment by delivering it in an intensive format. The goal of this innovative approach is to increase treatment momentum in order to minimize losses and maximize re-engagement in life.Kathryn Boger is a child and adolescent clinical psychologist, specializing in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders. She has had extensive training and experience in the delivery of empirically-supported treatments in both outpatient and residential levels of care. Kathryn helped to develop and is the program director for the McLean Anxiety Mastery Program (MAMP). MAMP is an outpatient, group-based program that is recognized as a regional leader in providing empirically-supported intensive treatment for children and adolescents, aged 7-19, with anxiety and Obsessive-Compulsive disorders. Kathryn conceptualized this program with a colleague in order to address the need for intensive, empirically-supported treatments for this age group and to help develop a continuum of care between weekly outpatient therapy and residential levels of care. Her goal is to provide an increased “dosage” of treatment to help kids who are struggling with debilitating anxiety learn to manage their symptoms and regain control of their lives more quickly. Kathryn will be talking about the treatment of pediatric anxiety in her TEDx talk. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Story in Children's Lives: Contributions of the Narrative Mode to Early Childhood Development, Literacy, and Learning

This book is based on the power of stories to support children in all areas of their lives. It examines the role narratives can play in encouraging growth in contexts and domains such as personal and family identity, creative movement, memory and self-concept, social relationships, or developing a sense of humor. Each chapter describes innovative and research-based applications of narratives such as movement stories, visual narratives to develop historical thinking, multimodal storytelling, bibliotherapy, mathematics stories, family stories, and social narratives. The chapters elaborate on the strength of narratives in supporting the whole child in diverse contexts from young children on the autism spectrum improving their social skills at school, to four- and five-year-olds developing historical thinking, to children who are refugees or asylum-seekers dealing with uncertainty and loss. Written by accomplished teachers, researchers, specialists, teaching artists and teacher educators from several countries and backgrounds, the book fills a gap in the literature on narratives. “…this work delves into the topic of narratives in young children’s lives with a breadth of topics and depth of study not found elsewhere.” “Collectively, the insights of the contributors build a convincing case for emphasizing story across the various disciplines and developmental domains of the early childhood years.” “The writing style is scholarly, yet accessible. Authors used a wide array of visual material to make their points clearer and show the reader what meaningful uses of story “look like”.” Mary Renck Jalongo, Journal and Book Series Editor Springer Indiana, PA, USA

Melatonin, Neuroprotective Agents and Antidepressant Therapy

This work is a guidebook for clinicians who are involved in treating depressive patients and also serves the research scientists who are working on the psychopharmacological mechanisms of antidepressant actions and psychopathological mechanisms underlying mood disorders. Mood disorders such as major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BPD) and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) are the most disabling disorders that are among the most expensive of all medical illnesses. The pathophysiology of mood disorders is very complex and involves many mechanisms like circadian rhythm disruption, sleep abnormalities, melatonin rhythm abnormalities and alterations in melatonin receptor mechanisms, abnormalities in monoaminergic neurotransmitter mechanisms, glutamatergic release mechanisms, hippocampal neurogenesis, and abnormal immune and cytokine release mechanisms. Many antidepressants that are in clinical use today including the recently introduced novel agents like agomelatine or other antidepressants cause clinical remission by resynchronizing disrupted circadian rhythms and melatonin receptor functions, enhancing monoaminergic neurotransmission, promoting hippocampal neurogenesis, and regulating immune mechanisms. This book explains various etiological factors that are involved in the pathogenesis of mood disorders and the mechanisms of therapeutic actions of antidepressants including the recently introduced agomelatine and other antidepressants that exhibit rapid onset of action with greater efficacy and fewer side effects. .
