As the slogan sounded before KISS hit the stage at all of their concerts…”you wanted the best- you got the best!” The iconic foursome of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss pioneered the spectacle of pyrotechnic & costume rock on a riveting stage of shooting rockets, exploding bombs, fire-breathing, blood spewing, levitating drums, and smoking guitars. The KISS army actually started building with an audience of less than 10 people that attended their first live performance at the old Popcorn Club in Queens, New York.KISS was paid a paltry $50 to perform two sets that night. They got the gig after Gene Simmons cold-called the venue booker, convincing him to hire the band for a 3 night stand. The 4 members of KISS each wore make-up for the 3 inaugural shows in Queens, but their signature facial character designs were not unveiled until a few months later at a concert at the Daisy in Amityville, New York.On the strength of their wild live set, the KISS army swelled- with a cult-like following, especially in the northeastern section of the Midwest America called the Rust Belt. On the strength of their wild live set, KISS was signed to Casablanca Records, and dropped their eponymous debut album in ’74. The self-titled KISS album did not have a hit single, and rose only as high as #87 on the Billboard 200, despite growing significance as a bad ass touring entity. KISS’s follow-up album, Hotter Than Hell, released later that same year, was an even bigger disappointment, peaking at 100, and quickly dropped off the charts.Meanwhile, Casablanca Records was in deep deep trouble. The leader of Casablanca, Neil Bogart & his minions, made some colossal blunders that nearly ruined the label, including the release of a double-album of audio highlights from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. That package was a disaster that affected every act signed to Casablanca, including KISS.KISS was the first act to be signed by Casablanca, but the company was primarily known as a disco label- with acts like Donna Summer, Cher, Lipps, Inc and the Village People. It was an inauspicious home for a future hall of fame rock band. The lukewarm sales of Hotter Than Hell, and the overall insolvency of the label put Casablanca’s leader, Neil Bogart on the offensive.

Also if you want to support our mission of curating the best of the rock era become a patron, Today we zero in on a song that is number one in our hearts;Gerry Rafferty spent a lot of time going back and forth from Glasgow, Scotland to London, England to meet with his lawyers when he was in the middle of a lawsuit with his former label and wasn’t able to record for 3 years. While he was in London, he stayed at a friend’s flat on Baker Street. It was in that apartment on Baker Street that Gerry wrote a deeply emotive and introspective narrative about a man that “drinks all night” to “forget about everything”, and dreams “about buying some land, giving up the booze & the one night stands- to settle down in a quiet little town.” The song Baker Street is one of the epics of the 70s, It’s as song that has been a fixture of Pop Culture from uses in Good Will Hunting to the Sopranos. Simply reading the lyric sheet of Rafferty’s tormenting catharsis makes “Baker Street” a bitingly powerful composition, but the sonic highlights of the track are perhaps even more arresting. “Winding your way down Baker Street- light in your head and dead on your feet.” It was just another crazy day in 1977, when the late Gerry Rafferty wrote that opening line of his seminal soft rock classic “Baker Street.” Gerry’s career was in a holding pattern following the breakup of Stealers Wheel, a band that he co-founded with his childhood chum Joe Egan. Gerry & Joe released a couple of singles as Stealers Wheel that stiffed before striking gold with “Stuck in the Middle With You” that was a #6 hit in America, and #8 hit in the UK in ’73. They had a mild follow-up hit with “Star” that stalled at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #25 in the UK.By 1975, Stealers Wheel had split up, and Rafferty & Egan wanted to move forward with their respective solo careers. However, the contract that they had signed with A&M Records prohibited them from releasing any music for three years. The dispute went to litigation, and was finally resolved in 1978, which cleared the path for City to City, Gerry Rafferty’s debut solo album that ended up selling over 6 million copies around the world.It was a painfully stressful 3 years for Gerry Rafferty, but amidst the adversity, he wrote one of the most epic songs of the Rock Era. “Baker Street” was all about the frustration that Rafferty was feeling from the legal battles to free himself from the Stealers Wheel contract. He spent a lot of time going back and forth from Glasgow, Scotland to London, England to meet with his lawyers, and while he was in London, he stayed at a friend’s flat on Baker Street. It was in that apartment on Baker Street that Gerry wrote a deeply emotive and introspective narrative about a man that “drinks all night” to “forget about everything”, and dreams “about buying some land, giving up the booze & the one night stands- to settle down in a quiet little town.” A thought I’ve had too many times to mention and I”m sure we all have felt at one time or another. It’s a depressing ending, but the most worthy and fitting finale for the character and the show. The song is the key. Baker Street in just a few notes can convey so many emotions, Fear, loathing, regret, desolation, as well as hope and faith for a better tomorrow.Considering the challenges that Gerry Rafferty overcame to release his solo material, and write this song and gift it to the masses, it would’ve been poetic for“Baker Street” to not only hit #1 but also win every award given that year.Thank you Gerry for this uncompromising and legendary compositions. Benny Mardones. We at Professor of Rock along with so many of you mourn the loss of this tender soul, who’s hit “Into the Night” charted 3 different times on the charts, including twice in the 80s. We covered this song in the inaugural episode of Number One in our Hearts, because it absolutely should’ve been a number one hit. I still maintain that Benny’s vocal performance for those few moments could go toe to toe with any voice on any song in music history. We were so fortunate to spend a few hours talking to Benny about his songs, his career and most of all, getting to know him as a human being.. It’s one of my favorite interviews. Since then we’ve had some wonderful correspondences over the years. Anyone who knew Benny can attest to the fact that Benny was humble, sweet, extremely caring, and deeply proud of the music he created. He really loved music and his fans. Most of all, Benny was a fighter. We’ve lost some great ones in music lately, and that’s why sharing this history is so important. That’s why sharing these songs and artists with our kids and their kids is paramount. We’re just never going to see artists and songs like these again. I hope I’m wrong. I really do. Several years earlier Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson the voice and guitar respectively of the hall of fame group were coming off a mini comeback. After taking the world by storm in the mid 70s with the albums Dreamboat Annie, little queen, and Dog and Butterfly the band entered the 80s with the rocking Bebele strange that went to the top 5 on the album charts while the lead single from that album even it up peaked at 33 on the hot 100. From there the next few studio albums sold less and less.The band was in the midst of a slump with 1982’s private edition and 1983 passion works falling short of commercial expectations and the singles from those records languished outside of the top twenty. With the advent of MTV and the popularity of the synth in the neon decade the suits at the label started to push rockers Ann and Nancy a new direction .Ann and Nancy having written the majority of their output up to that point were pushed to record outside writers music as well as collaborate with many of these writers. This resulted in immediate commercial success. In 1985 Heart’s self titled lp went to #1 their only album up to this point to do so. The album contained 4 top ten hits including the number one smash These Dreams. Leading to the release of Bad Animals which continued the commercial success. I had a chance to talk to Ann Wilson about this period in the 80s when they were stuggling commercially up to the point of success, including the story behind their number one hit Alone. Today the Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar tells us how he joined Van Halen and the resulting Music. He also tells the story behind creating the game changing song Dreams, the second single from their 1986 album 5150 which was the first Van Halen album to go to #1. The album 5150 is named after Eddie Van Halen’s studio. 5150, sold a million copies in it’s first week. Think about that for a second. We all want to know that. If comic book movies are any indication of our culture, we are all curious why someone was inspired to become their best self. When I interviewed Ann Wilson of Heart, I wanted to know why she ended up singing and why here sister played the guitar. Because as You’ll find, Ann Wilson actually played the guitar before her sister. What were the moments that shaped here, Your’e going to find out next. Years after Heart formed They started to take over radio. It all started with their classic debut album Dreamboat Annie. Heart’s first single from the album was “How Deep It Goes” , and it didn’t receive much attention when released in Canada by the small Mushroom label in 1975. The second single, “Magic Man” (backed with “How Deep It Goes”), was first picked up for radio play by a station in Montreal while the band was on tour playing small club dates, In America, Crazy on You was the first single followed quickly by Magic Man with would become Heart’s first top ten hit and started the legend that has endured up to now.
