These People Were Just Trying To Get To Work When This Monstrosity Opened Up
The workday commute is difficult enough without total disasters getting in the way.
I live less than eight blocks from the school where I teach and it still takes me almost 10 minutes to get to work. Since I only live in a mid-sized town, I can’t even begin to imagine the struggles of trying to get to work in a much larger hub like New York City or Philadelphia. While there are many ways I could go about bettering my daily commute, after seeing what improving the subway systems in this Japanese city could’ve just caused, I think I’ll stick to leaving a few minutes early.Commuters in Fukuoka, Japan, were in for quite the delay when a large sinkhole opened up in the middle of the street.
Read More: If You’re Looking For A Crazy Adventure, Cliff Camping Could Be Your Next ThrillThe almost 100-foot-wide sinkhole is said to have started as two significantly smaller sinkholes before merging into the immense cavity pictured below.
Sewage quickly began filling the gap which is almost 50 feet deep.
While local authorities are still investigating the cause of the leak, subway crews were working just under 1,000 feet away from the split trying to extend an existing tunnel. Some say this could’ve contributed to the disaster.
Luckily, no one was injured because of the sinkhole, but many nearby residents were evacuated and roughly 170 households are still without power.
The five major roads surrounding the sinkhole site, located in the Fukuoka business district, have also been closed down until further notice. It is unknown if there was any major damage to surrounding gas lines, and investigations into potential gas leaks are still underway.I don’t know about you, but that’s definitely not how I’d like to start my day.

This Strange Insomnia Disease Forces Its Victims To Stay Awake Until They Die
If you suffer from any level of insomnia, you know how damaging it can be to your health as well as your personal life. So you can just imagine having a disease that NEVER allows you to sleep, keeping you in a constant state of exhaustion…until your body gives up and dies.
That’s what fatal familial insomnia (FFI) is. The disease is extremely rare (less than one out of 10 million people have it), but those who do suffer from it live in extreme agony. Sadly, so far there is no cure.
The cause of FFI is a mutated protein called PrPSc, which has only been found in 40 families worldwide, affecting around 100 people.
The first signs of the disease are just basic symptoms of insomnia, along with panic attacks, paranoia, and phobias.
After four months pass, the hallucinations start. Sometimes victims will act out their dreams, despite not really being asleep. One woman, who was a hair stylist before being diagnosed, brushed imaginary people’s hair.
Five months later, victims are completely unable to sleep and experience rapid weight loss.
Over the course of the next six months, victims develop dementia and go into a non-responsive, dream-like state. Eventually, they die from exhaustion. The average lifespan of a patient after the onset of symptoms is 18 months.

There is currently no cure for FFI, but as sufferers of the disease continue donating their brains to science, experts believe they are getting closer to finding one. In the meantime, people with FFI go to often bizarre lengths to help them sleep, such as sensory deprivation tanks and even electroconvulsive therapy.

Trains Screaming Like Humans Are Somehow The Funniest And Most Horrifying Thing Ever
There are some things on the Internet that are best left unexplained. To ask why YouTuber theseheavenlybodies would insert panicked voices over several speeding trains would only lead one down a rabbit hole of more unanswerable questions…spiraling into insanity. All you need to know is that it looks like the trains are screaming, and it’s simultaneously hilarious and frightening.
I can’t deny that I’ve watched this video at least 15 times now, and each time I get more confused. The best thing to do is to embrace the chaos. One YouTube commenter described it as “Thomas and friends on mushrooms.” Seems about right.

This Brave Skier Doesn’t Scare Easily, But What He Saw Left Him Pretty Shaken Up
When Will Burks, 41, started his ski run on Della Mountain in Hailey, Idaho, one day, he wasn’t expecting to be faced with disaster. First of all, Burks isn’t your average skier. Instead, he prefers to ski-fly, which means that he skis right off the edge of the mountain and uses a parachute to float down to the bottom. It’s pretty safe to say that it’s hard to scare him.
And that’s why this footage is so incredible. When this brave guy opened up his parachute and looked down at the mountain that he was just skiing on, he saw something pretty alarming.
Burks later learned that the avalanche that he’d so narrowly escaped was classified as a D2 event. Basically, this skier is lucky that he jumped when he did. The ending of this story could’ve been far more upsetting!

While Hunting For A Legendary Creature, This Woman Met A Terrible Fate
In a truly tragic twist of fate, a woman was killed by a train while trying to hunt down a cryptozoological being that’s known to lure people onto the tracks. Roquel Bain and her boyfriend were visiting Louisville, Kentucky, from Ohio when they decided to stalk the legendary Pope Lick Monster, which is a mythological creature that is supposedly a cross between a man and a goat.
The two unwittingly fell into the monster’s trap and were struck by a train on the bridge. Roquel’s boyfriend managed to hang for dear life, but she fell off the bridge and died.
Roquel Bain, 26, of Dayton, Ohio, and her boyfriend were vacationing in Louisville. They bought tickets for a tour of the nearby Waverly Hills Sanatorium, but decided to hunt for Kentucky’s elusive Pope Lick Monster beforehand.
The Pope Lick Monster is a creature that supposedly lives in Pope Lick Creek. Some legends say that he is an escaped circus freak. Others believe that he is the reincarnation of a farmer who once sacrificed goats.
He’s said to use hypnosis to lure his victims onto the bridge above the creek. There was no hypnosis happening in this case, however. Roquel and her boyfriend crossed the bridge of their own accord.
Unfortunately, while they were on the tracks, a train surprised them. With nowhere to escape, Roquel was hit by the train, which caused her to fall 100 feet. Her boyfriend held onto the bridge and survived with no major injuries.
In 1988, a local film called “The Legend of the Pope Lick Monster”debuted in Louisville theaters. The Norfolk Southern Railway took issue with the film, as they were afraid it might encourage young people to hang out on the trestles. Based on this story, I’d say that their fears were totally justified.

Even The Tallest Building On Earth Trembles At The Hands Of This Lightning Storm
There are few things more beautiful than listening to thunder crack and watching lightning dance outside your window. But when a thunderstorm rolls over the tallest building on the planet, the effect is even more amazing than you could possibly imagine.
The footage below, taken in Dubai, captures an explosive lightning strike over the Burj Khalifa, which stands 2,722 feet tall. Fortunately for us, Instagram user Fazza decided to share his chilling, beautiful video with the rest of the world.
Interestingly enough, the keen-eyed photographer who caught this shocking spectacle also goes by the name of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the crown prince of Dubai! Even royalty can’t deny the allure of nature.
