If you suffer from any level of insomnia, you know how damaging it can be to your health as well as your personal life. So you can just imagine having a disease that NEVER allows you to sleep, keeping you in a constant state of exhaustion…until your body gives up and dies.
That’s what fatal familial insomnia (FFI) is. The disease is extremely rare (less than one out of 10 million people have it), but those who do suffer from it live in extreme agony. Sadly, so far there is no cure.

There is currently no cure for FFI, but as sufferers of the disease continue donating their brains to science, experts believe they are getting closer to finding one. In the meantime, people with FFI go to often bizarre lengths to help them sleep, such as sensory deprivation tanks and even electroconvulsive therapy.

There are some things on the Internet that are best left unexplained. To ask why YouTuber theseheavenlybodies would insert panicked voices over several speeding trains would only lead one down a rabbit hole of more unanswerable questions…spiraling into insanity. All you need to know is that it looks like the trains are screaming, and it’s simultaneously hilarious and frightening.
I can’t deny that I’ve watched this video at least 15 times now, and each time I get more confused. The best thing to do is to embrace the chaos. One YouTube commenter described it as “Thomas and friends on mushrooms.” Seems about right.

In a truly tragic twist of fate, a woman was killed by a train while trying to hunt down a cryptozoological being that’s known to lure people onto the tracks. Roquel Bain and her boyfriend were visiting Louisville, Kentucky, from Ohio when they decided to stalk the legendary Pope Lick Monster, which is a mythological creature that is supposedly a cross between a man and a goat.
The two unwittingly fell into the monster’s trap and were struck by a train on the bridge. Roquel’s boyfriend managed to hang for dear life, but she fell off the bridge and died.
In 1988, a local film called “The Legend of the Pope Lick Monster”debuted in Louisville theaters. The Norfolk Southern Railway took issue with the film, as they were afraid it might encourage young people to hang out on the trestles. Based on this story, I’d say that their fears were totally justified.

Interestingly enough, the keen-eyed photographer who caught this shocking spectacle also goes by the name of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the crown prince of Dubai! Even royalty can’t deny the allure of nature.
Sometimes winter isn’t all that bad.
Case in point: when the sun sets in a cold environment, it reflects against ice crystals that manifest in the air. The collective surface of these ice crystals acts as a mirror to the sun and other light sources (like street lamps), reflecting their light into the image of pillars reaching for the stars.
That’s a lot of sciencey-sounding stuff, but all you really need to know is that light pillars look cool as hell. Check out these pictures taken from people all over the world!

So even though winter is sometimes a mushy mess of discolored snow on the ground, up in the sky it’s a heavenly light show for the gods. If only there was a way that I could see a light pillar without leaving the warmth of my apartment…
