Dr. Karen Parker, director of the Social Neurosciences Research Program at Stanford University(25 mins) Dr. Parker is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University where she directs the Social Neurosciences Research Program as its principal investigator. Her research expertise is the biology of social functioning, with a particular interest in oxytocin and vasopressin signaling pathways. Her preclinical research program focuses on developing novel animal models; her clinical research program encompasses biomarker discovery and therapeutic testing in patients with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. She serves on the Editorial Board of Psychoneuroendocrinology, the scientific advisory board for the Stanford Autism Center at Packard Children’s Hospital, and on various national (e.g., NIH and NSF) and international (e.g., Medical Research Council) grant review committees. Three Men and a Maid by P. G. Wodehouse

https://youtube.com/watch?v=VrlPf_Y3mco

“Three Men and a Maid” in the USA and “The Girl on the Boat” in the UK, is a typical P.G. Wodehouse romantic comedy, involving, at various times: a disastrous talent quest, a lawyer with a revolver, a bulldog with a mind of his own and a suit of armour! The maid, or marriageable young woman, is red-haired, dog-loving Wilhelmina “Billie” Bennet. The three men are Bream Mortimer, a long-time friend and admirer of Billie, Eustace Hignett, a poet of sensitive disposition who is engaged to Billie at the opening of the tale, and Sam Marlowe, Eustace’s would-be-dashing cousin, who falls for Billie at first sight. All four find themselves on an ocean liner headed for England together, along with an elephant-gun-wielding young woman called Jane Hubbard who is smitten with Eustace the poet. Typically Wodehousian romantic shenanigans ensue.Chapter 1 – 00:00 Chapter 2 – 22:05 Chapter 3 – 1:03:32 Chapter 4 – 1:21:19 Chapter 5 – 1:50:26 Chapter 6 – 2:03:33 Chapter 7 – 2:13:04 Chapter 8 – 2:32:36 Chapter 9 – 2:43:07 Chapter 10 – 3:00:14 Chapter 11 – 3:05:34 Chapter 12 – 3:22:28 Chapter 13 – 3:35:40 Chapter 14 – 3:48:36 Chapter 15 – 4:09:08 Chapter 16 – 4:28:34Read by Tim Bulkeley (https://librivox.org/reader/753)

Heart and Brain Disease in Women: Sex and Gender Connections

The evidence on sex differences in understanding, treating and preventing disease is mounting, and The National Institutes of Health has made Sex as a Biological Variable (SABV) key to all research it funds. Scientists are developing an unprecedented understanding, in particular, of the links between heart and brain disorders in both women and men. These insights are opening new frontiers in investigating the co-occurrence of heart disease and depression, and the risk for memory decline and Alzheimer’s disease — comorbidities that disproportionately impact women. Applying a sex-and-gender lens, this Forum explored the unfolding story of newly-discovered connections between heart and brain – and their potential to transform understanding of heart disease, Alzheimer’s and depression in women. Presented during American Heart Month and shortly before International Women’s Day, we asked why diseases of the heart and brain often go hand-in-hand, with women often at twice the risk of men – and how this new understanding can be translated into better treatments and prevention strategies for women across the globe.Presented jointly with STAT on February 28, 2018.Watch the entire series at ForumHSPH.org.

Gender, Work Stress, and Health

In Gender, Work Stress, and Health, editors Debra L. Nelson and Ronald J. Burke explore how socially defined gender roles affect individuals’ experience of stress and health at work. Working with a group of interdisciplinary contributors, they examine the interplay of gender, individual differences, social support, coping skills, family dynamics, and aspects of the work environment and ask how these affect health. This collection draws from the emerging knowledge in the fields of management, psychology, sociology, and epidemiology. Among the questions examined are whether men and women experience different sources of stress at work, whether they experience different symptoms of distress, whether they benefit equally from social support, how they cope, and what organizations are doing to help. Professionals in human resources management, consulting, training and development, and occupational health will be particularly interested in the effectiveness of prevention and intervention efforts related to corporate culture and flexible workload arrangements and whether family-friendly policies are fulfilling their promise of helping to balance work and family demands. Researchers in management, business, occupational psychology, sociology, and gender studies will find fertile areas for continued exploration within this field.
