These words describe an endless cycle that repeated itself in Israel for generations. Throughout the preceding chapters, we find these words repeated again and again. They read, in essence, “And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim…and God, in his hot anger, sold them into the hand of their enemies.” The first instance occurs in chapter 3. We’re told, “The land had rest forty years…and the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord” (3:11-12). God gave his people over to an enemy, Moab, “because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord” (3:12). And Israel served this heathen enemy for eighteen years, enduring hardship and terror. Then, in chapter 4, we read, “And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord…and the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan” (4:1-2). This time God’s people were made captive by the Canaanites. Of course, every time Israel was enslaved, they cried out to God. And each time, the Lord was faithful to send them a deliverer. But as soon as that righteous leader died, the people predictably returned to their sin. And the whole cycle began all over again. It continues with our text verse, in chapter 6: “And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years” (6:1). During this period, Israel was continually brought low by their enemy Midian. Like clockwork, the Midianites raided Israel each year, plundering their crops and goods. Midian’s caravan leaders would release all their camels and livestock into Israel’s fields to graze. And the beasts completely devoured the crops, sweeping through the fields like locusts. Whenever Israel resisted, the Midianites drove them into the hills and mountains. God’s people ended up seeking refuge in caves and dens, and having to scavenge for food. “And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites” (6:6). Israel lost everything to their enemy: their houses, their food, their goods. They lived like paupers, homeless and bereft. Once again, Scripture says, “The children of Israel cried unto the Lord” (6:6). Yet this cry wasn’t one of repentance. Israel cried because of their oppression by the Midianites. It was a cry of anguish, due to their poverty, their losses, their insecurity. This time, before God sent a deliverer to Israel, he sent a prophet. This man of God put his finger on the reason the people were being so harassed. He pointed out, “Look at your history. In each case, God delivered you out of the hands of all who oppressed you. He brought you out of bondage in Egypt. And he told you not to fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But you haven’t obeyed him. You still pay homage to false gods” (see 6:8-10). The Lord was telling his people, in essence, “I made it clear to you from the very beginning: you are not to fear anyone but your heavenly Father. Let no other fear enter your heart. But you’ve disobeyed me once again. You’ve allowed all kinds of fears to enter in. And you’ve forced me to hand you over to your enemy, to drive you back to myself.” ….. Even today their sermons remain burned in my memory: “The Bible says Christ will come like a thief in the night, when you least expect him. It will happen in the twinkling of an eye, with the sound of a trumpet. You must be ready at all times.” The powerful cry, “Jesus is coming!” is seldom heard in God’s house today. Very few Christians live with a sense of expectancy, looking and yearning for Jesus’ return. How has this happened? The New Testament gives many warnings that mockers will appear in the last days, ridiculing the doctrine of Christ’s coming. Peter writes, “There shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation” (2 Peter 3:3-4). This mocking can be heard today: “What does anyone have to fear? All things continue just as they always have. There is no reason to fear a Judgment Day, because it simply isn’t coming.” The devil has whispered a different lie into the ears of many believers. That lie is, “Christ has delayed his coming.” Jesus addresses this in Matthew 24 in his parable about being ready for his return: “Be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. “But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to smite his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 24:45-51). Jesus is speaking here about believers, identifying them as servants. One of these servants is faithful while the other is evil. What makes the second servant evil in the Lord’s eyes? According to Jesus, it is something “he shall say in his heart” — that “the Lord delays his coming.” In other words, he’s convinced Jesus won’t come suddenly or unexpectedly. He has been instructed to “watch,” to “be ready,” “for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not” (Luke 12:40). But instead this servant eases his conscience by believing Satan’s lie. Once he accepts the devil’s lie, here is the fruit: Because he sees no need to watch for Christ’s coming, he doesn’t see any need to make peace with his fellow servants. There is no need to preserve unity at home, at work, in the church, no need to make things right with others. Instead, he feels he could “smite his fellow servants,” accusing them, holding grudges and destroying others’ reputations. This servant seeks only to play, to have pleasure, to live with no conscience. In short, he wants both Jesus and the world. … © 2012 World Challenge. All rights reserved. HIDDEN FEARS That same day, a New York City police officer spoke to me about the uncertainty and alarm within the police force and fire departments. Their macho exteriors hid secret fears because most of them had lost friends during the 9/11 attacks. Even now, years later, each time some New Yorkers travel through tunnels and over bridges they hold their breath and pray for protection. A stalled vehicle can cause panic. The greatest fear that haunts this city is a suitcase bomb, carrying nuclear or germ capabilities. Many people began carrying small gas masks. The citizenry seem to be resigned to the inevitable, believing an attack of major proportions will eventually strike. No one knows when, but the thought hangs heavily over the populace. A SOURCE OF HELP Yet there is not fear among true believers. Instead, we want to be available should an attack come, to help in the time of crisis. This is how our church has prepared our people. In the midst of theses apprehensive times, the Spirit of God is moving in a marvelous way. Many are coming to Christ throughout New York City, and there is an increasing hunger for God among young people. May this be the heart attitude of all God’s servants in these days of apprehension and fear. The Lord has removed all fear from His people, that they may be a source of help to the world in a time of trouble. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.’ Now the #works of the #flesh are evident, which are: #lewdness, #idolatry, #sorcery, #hatred, #contentions, #jealousies, #outbursts of #wrath, #selfish #ambitions, #dissensions, #heresies, #envy, #murders, #drunkenness, #revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the #kingdom of #God.’ But the #fruit of the Spirit is #love, #joy, #peace, #longsuffering, #kindness, #goodness, #faithfulness, #gentleness, #self-control. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. If the Holy Spirit is in you let Him have control over your life. If He lives in you let Him direct your life. Walking in the spirit simply means you make no decisions until you hear from Him. We surrender our will and give complete control over to His government. The key to this walk is found in three words – JUST SAY YES- Say yes to all the promises of God and believe the Holy Spirit to accomplish this in and through you.
