Bellevue Guide to Outpatient Medicine

The Bellevue Guide to Health Care represents a collaboration among primary care and specialist physicians in the Department of Medicine at New York School of Medicine. It is intended for use by teachers, students and practitioners of primary care and in the hospital outpatient department. The Guide presents data about prevalence of disease, accuracy and diagnosis from congestive heart failure to domestic violence. Advice about patient management is interwoven with annotated references in a unique two column format providing the actual data upon which recommendations are based. (For example, recommendations to use statin drugs to treat hypermlipidemia are accompanied by literature based estimates of live-saving potential by statins among various patient groups.) Readers of The Guide are encouraged to use this data to tailor clinical decisions to meet the needs of their individual patients.

How to channel your stress to help you succeed | Heidi Hanna | TEDxSDSU

Dr. Heidi Hanna loves stress. Yup, you read that right. In fact, she thinks we are all capable of loving it too. She reveals how to turn stress from an enemy to a friend through the lens of curiosity. What if stressing really is a blessing? Heidi Hanna, PhD is an integrative neuroscience researcher and the Executive Director of the American Institute of Stress. She is a New York Times best selling author, and recovering stressaholic. Heidi’s passion is helping people transform their relationship with stress by understanding and adapting personal and organizational energy management practices. She believes that the answer to our current stress epidemic is training a new, whole-brain stress response based in a curiosity mindset that facilitates positive change and collaboration. Only when we stop trying to minimize or manage stress will we learn how to master it, and use stress as fuel for good. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

From What Is to What If

The founder of the international Transition Towns movement asks why true creative, positive thinking is in decline, asserts that it’s more important now than ever, and suggests ways our communities can revive and reclaim it. In these times of deep division and deeper despair, if there is a consensus about anything in the world, it is that the future is going to be awful. There is an epidemic of loneliness, an epidemic of anxiety, a mental health crisis of vast proportions, especially among young people. There’s a rise in extremist movements and governments. Catastrophic climate change. Biodiversity loss. Food insecurity. The fracturing of ecosystems and communities beyond, it seems, repair. The future—to say nothing of the present—looks grim. But as Transition movement cofounder Rob Hopkins tells us, there is plenty of evidence that things can change, and cultures can change, rapidly, dramatically, and unexpectedly—for the better. He has seen it happen around the world and in his own town of Totnes, England, where the community is becoming its own housing developer, energy company, enterprise incubator, and local food network—with cascading benefits to the community that extend far beyond the projects themselves. We do have the capability to effect dramatic change, Hopkins argues, but we’re failing because we’ve largely allowed our most critical tool to languish: human imagination. As defined by social reformer John Dewey, imagination is the ability to look at things as if they could be otherwise. The ability, that is, to ask What if? And if there was ever a time when we needed that ability, it is now. Imagination is central to empathy, to creating better lives, to envisioning and then enacting a positive future. Yet imagination is also demonstrably in decline at precisely the moment when we need it most. In this passionate exploration, Hopkins asks why imagination is in decline, and what we must do to revive and reclaim it. Once we do, there is no end to what we might accomplish. From What Is to What If is a call to action to reclaim and unleash our collective imagination, told through the stories of individuals and communities around the world who are doing it now, as we speak, and witnessing often rapid and dramatic change for the better.

Lessons

The instant New York Times bestseller Supermodel and philanthropist Gisele Bündchen shares personal stories, insights, and photos to explore lessons that have helped shape her life. Gisele Bündchen’s journey began in southern Brazil, growing up with five sisters, playing volleyball, and rescuing the dogs and cats around her hometown. In fact, she wanted to become either a professional volley player or a veterinarian. But at the age of 14, fate suddenly intervened in in the form of a modeling scout, who spotted her in São Paulo. Four years later, Gisele’s appearance in Alexander McQueen’s memorably rain-soaked London runway show in the spring 1998 launched her spectacular career as a fashion model, and put an end to the “heroin chic” era of fashion. Since then, Gisele has appeared in almost 400 ad campaigns and on over 1200 magazine covers. She has walked in more than 470 fashion shows for the most influential brands in the world. Gisele has become an icon, leaving a lasting mark on the fashion industry. But until now, few people have gotten to know the real Gisele, a woman whose private life stands in dramatic contrast to her public image. In Lessons, she reveals for the first time who she really is and what she’s learned over the past 37 years to help her live a meaningful life–a journey that takes readers from a childhood spent barefoot in small-town Brazil, to an internationally successful career, motherhood and marriage to quarterback Tom Brady. A work of great openness and vulnerability, Lessons reveals the inner life of a very public woman.

The Necessary Transition

Life on Earth for humanity and our ecosystems is at a point of great change. There is much to be learnt about previous great disruptions. The key words are *adaptation* and *transformation*. Most international companies operate across multiple social and environmental geographies, so they know this intellectual and practical landscape. And for many governments the challenges of social and environmental justice are also paramount – not least because equitable societies are best for business, and best for human well-being.The Necessary Transition addresses the many transitions taking place around the world: from high- to low-carbon economies, from gross inequality to egalitarianism, from massive human rights abuses to socially just societies, and from high corruption to societies with high social cohesion and integrity. The book brings together leading international researchers and practitioners to share their knowledge and expertise, and offers answers to many of the pressing questions that must be addressed in the journey towards a sustainable enterprise economy – an absolutely necessary transition for humanity.Contributors include: Sara Parkin, Founder-Director and Trustee of the UK’s Forum for the Future; Bill Champion, Managing Director, Rio Tinto Coal Australia; and Mark Swilling, co-author of “Just Transitions” and Academic Director of the Sustainability Institute, South Africa. The key question is: “Is a transition to a sustainable future possible within the logic of conventional capitalism and 20th-century models of development?” This book provides radical perspectives from varying entry points and is essential reading for academics and practitioners interested in how we plan, speed and scale such necessary transitions.
