Beyond Bacon

Beyond Bacon pays homage to the humble hog by teaching you how to make more than a hundred recipes featuring cuts from the entire animal. While bacon might be the most popular part of the pig for those following the paleo diet, there is a plethora of other delicious and nutrient dense cuts to enjoy. Pastured pork is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), the “good fats” our doctors want us to eat. Beyond Bacon breaks the myths behind this often eschewed meat and shows you how create delectable dishes that are grain-, legume-, dairy-, and refined sugar-free. Beyond Bacon allows you to improve your health and the environment by focusing on sustainable swine. Don’t let the dried out pork of your youth scare you away. All the recipes in Beyond Bacon are elegant yet approachable, making it the ultimate cookbook for the foodie in you. You¦ll find: Grain-free Pie Crust, made with lard, Perfect Pork Chops, better than most restaurant steaks, Swedish Meatballs with liver gravy, Pho Soup with chitterling “noodles”, instructions on how to properly BBQ and make your own sauces, and a guide to rendering your own CLA-rich lard and how to cook with it. Beyond Bacon delivers mouth-watering photos for each delicious recipe. With a rustic aesthetic and appreciation for tradition, Beyond Bacon recreates the rich and wonderful food perfected generations ago in a healthful way.

Three Men and a Maid by P. G. Wodehouse

https://youtube.com/watch?v=VrlPf_Y3mco

“Three Men and a Maid” in the USA and “The Girl on the Boat” in the UK, is a typical P.G. Wodehouse romantic comedy, involving, at various times: a disastrous talent quest, a lawyer with a revolver, a bulldog with a mind of his own and a suit of armour! The maid, or marriageable young woman, is red-haired, dog-loving Wilhelmina “Billie” Bennet. The three men are Bream Mortimer, a long-time friend and admirer of Billie, Eustace Hignett, a poet of sensitive disposition who is engaged to Billie at the opening of the tale, and Sam Marlowe, Eustace’s would-be-dashing cousin, who falls for Billie at first sight. All four find themselves on an ocean liner headed for England together, along with an elephant-gun-wielding young woman called Jane Hubbard who is smitten with Eustace the poet. Typically Wodehousian romantic shenanigans ensue.Chapter 1 – 00:00 Chapter 2 – 22:05 Chapter 3 – 1:03:32 Chapter 4 – 1:21:19 Chapter 5 – 1:50:26 Chapter 6 – 2:03:33 Chapter 7 – 2:13:04 Chapter 8 – 2:32:36 Chapter 9 – 2:43:07 Chapter 10 – 3:00:14 Chapter 11 – 3:05:34 Chapter 12 – 3:22:28 Chapter 13 – 3:35:40 Chapter 14 – 3:48:36 Chapter 15 – 4:09:08 Chapter 16 – 4:28:34Read by Tim Bulkeley (https://librivox.org/reader/753)

Heart and Brain Disease in Women: Sex and Gender Connections

The evidence on sex differences in understanding, treating and preventing disease is mounting, and The National Institutes of Health has made Sex as a Biological Variable (SABV) key to all research it funds. Scientists are developing an unprecedented understanding, in particular, of the links between heart and brain disorders in both women and men. These insights are opening new frontiers in investigating the co-occurrence of heart disease and depression, and the risk for memory decline and Alzheimer’s disease — comorbidities that disproportionately impact women. Applying a sex-and-gender lens, this Forum explored the unfolding story of newly-discovered connections between heart and brain – and their potential to transform understanding of heart disease, Alzheimer’s and depression in women. Presented during American Heart Month and shortly before International Women’s Day, we asked why diseases of the heart and brain often go hand-in-hand, with women often at twice the risk of men – and how this new understanding can be translated into better treatments and prevention strategies for women across the globe.Presented jointly with STAT on February 28, 2018.Watch the entire series at ForumHSPH.org.
