Not Tonight: Author Talk with Joanna Kempner

Joanna Kempner, associate professor of sociology at Rutgers University, delivered a talk about her book, Not Tonight: Migraine and the Politics of Gender and Health, on Tuesday, July 7 at the Alexander Library. In Not Tonight, published in 2014 by the University of Chicago Press, Kempner argues that the attitude of dismissal toward migraine and the stigmas attached to its sufferers are products of a long history of stereotypical thinking about gender and pain. Kempner draws on sociology, anthropology, literature, history, and science to track feminized ideas about migraine from the disorder’s 19th century identification with neurotic women and effete, overly intellectual men, through the 1940s association of migraine with detached, sexually distant housewives, to contemporary notions of the over-sensitive “migraine brain.” Kempner shows that, for years, these ideas have radically impacted medical practice, research funding, and the making of policies for people in pain.Learn more about Kempner and the event here: http://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/news/author-talk-joanna-kempner-not-tonight-tuesday-july-7This event was recorded by RU-tv. Howards End Audiobook by E. M. Forster | Full Audiobook | Part 1

https://youtube.com/watch?v=fjZLjtB491Y

The book is about three families in England at the beginning of the twentieth century. The three families represent different gradations of the Edwardian middle class: the Wilcoxes, who are rich capitalists with a fortune made in the Colonies; the half-German Schlegel siblings (Margaret, Tibby, and Helen), who represent the intellectual bourgeoisie and have a lot in common with the real-life Bloomsbury Group; and the Basts, a couple who are struggling members of the lower-middle class. The Schlegel sisters try to help the poor Basts and try to make the Wilcoxes less prejudiced. The motto of the book is “Only connect…” Howards End E. M. Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev | Audiobook with Subtitles

https://youtube.com/watch?v=IfUbR4zrrEc

The fathers and children of the novel refers to the growing divide between the two generations of Russians, and the character Yevgeny Bazarov has been referred to as the “first Bolshevik”, for his nihilism and rejection of the old order.Turgenev wrote Fathers and Sons as a response to the growing cultural schism that he saw between liberals of the 1830s/1840s and the growing nihilist movement. Both the nihilists (the “sons”) and the 1830s liberals sought Western-based social change in Russia. Additionally, these two modes of thought were contrasted with the conservative Slavophiles, who believed that Russia’s path lay in its traditional spirituality.Fathers and Sons might be regarded as the first wholly modern novel in Russian Literature (Gogol’s Dead Souls, another main contender, is sometimes referred to as a poem or epic in prose as in the style of Dante’s Divine Comedy). The novel introduces a dual character study, as seen with the gradual breakdown of Bazarov’s and Arkady’s nihilistic opposition to emotional display, especially in the case of Bazarov’s love for Madame Odintsova and Fenichka. This prominent theme of character duality and deep psychological insight would exert an influence on most of the great Russian novels to come, most obviously echoed in the novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. The novel is also the first Russian work to gain prominence in the Western world, eventually gaining the approval of well established novelists Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, and Henry James, proving that Russian literature owes much to Ivan Turgenev. anxiety free book

Range anxiety is the fear that a vehicle has insufficient range to reach its destination and would thus strand the vehicle’s occupants. The term, which is primarily used in reference to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), is considered to be one of the major barriers to large scale adoption of all-electric cars. The term range anxiety was first reported in the press on September 1, 1997 in the San Diego Business Journal by Richard Acello referring to worries of GM EV1 electric car drivers. On July 6, 2010, General Motors filed to trademark the term, stating it was for the purpose of “promoting public awareness of electric vehicle capabilities”. The Norwegian equivalent rekkeviddeangst was assigned second place in a list of Norwegian “words of the year” for 2013 by the Norwegian Language Council. The main strategies to alleviate range anxiety among electric car drivers are the deployment of extensive charging infrastructure, the development of higher battery capacity at a cost-effective price, battery swapping technology, use of range extenders, accurate navigation and range prediction and availability of free loan vehicles for long trips.

Herbal’s the book

A herbal is a book containing the names and descriptions of plants, usually with information on their medicinal, tonic, culinary, toxic, hallucinatory, aromatic, or magical powers, and the legends associated with them. A herbal may also classify the plants it describes, may give recipes for herbal extracts, tinctures, or potions, and sometimes include mineral and animal medicaments in addition to those obtained from plants. Herbals were often illustrated to assist plant identification. Herbals were among the first literature produced in Ancient Egypt, China, India, and Europe as the medical wisdom of the day accumulated by herbalists, apothecaries, and physicians. Herbals were also among the first books to be printed in both China and Europe. In Western, Europe herbals flourished for two centuries following the introduction of moveable type (c. 1470–1670).In the late 17th century, the rise of modern chemistry, toxicology, and pharmacology reduced the medicinal value of the classical herbal. As reference manuals for botanical study and plant identification herbals were supplanted by Floras – systematic accounts of the plants found growing in a particular region, with scientifically accurate botanical descriptions, classification, and illustrations. Herbals have seen a modest revival in the Western world since the last decades of the 20th century, as herbalism and related disciplines (such as homeopathy and aromatherapy) became popular forms of alternative medicine.see more at WikipediaCheck More at https://IGMoneyTree.com/LeRoyMoco
