Contested Illnesses

The politics and science of health and disease remain contested terrain among scientists, health practitioners, policy makers, industry, communities, and the public. Stakeholders in disputes about illnesses or conditions disagree over their fundamental causes as well as how they should be treated and prevented. This thought-provoking book crosses disciplinary boundaries by engaging with both public health policy and social science, asserting that science, activism, and policy are not separate issues and showing how the contribution of environmental factors in disease is often overlooked.

Torn

Torn is an anthology of essays that captures the voices of a generation of women caught in the crossfire of kids, career, and family life. In a series of 48 heartfelt and often laugh-out-loud essays, the book exposes the dirty truths of motherhood and the inevitable crises of that life brings: battles with cancer, lost jobs, broken marriages, unplanned pregnancies, the heartbreak of infertility, and lots of “bad mommy” moments. As these stories illustrate, there is no perfect mother, nor is there a perfect balance when it comes to kids and a successful career.

How does it help with stress and relieve it for good : If you have ever experienced overthinking and occasional tension headache you know exactly how stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tension. Progressive relaxation, also called progressive muscle relaxation, is a deep relaxation technique that progressively releases the tension you’re holding in your body. Progressive relaxation has been found to effectively reduce stress, lower anxiety, help control pain, improve quality of sleep and improve overall prospects of live, that keeps you stress free and relaxed. So, how do you practice progressive relaxation? Fortunately, it’s pretty simple. You take a deep breath and at the same time you tense or tighten one muscle group, hold the tension for 5- 10 seconds (hold your breath too) and then release the tension slowly as you breathe out slowly.(So when you are breathing in, you are tensing muscles, when you are holding breath you are holding tension, then when you breathe out slowly, you are releasing tension slowly.)You continue to do this for all of the muscle groups in your body. You can start at your scalp or forehead, move to your face (eyes, cheeks and jaw), then down to your neck and shoulders, then your arms and hands, followed by your back, hips and buttocks, then your legs and finally your feet. This way your full body will relax instantly as you move along this process. To take these exercise to next level (Optional steps though), try and visualize each muscle group and visualize tension releasing from your whole body. This music will act as an anchor cue so next time when you listen to this music your body will immediately go into deep relaxation without you even practising progressive relaxation technique. ( This is genuinely an amazing yet easy way of visualization meditation. )You are training your body and mind to relax naturally to remain stress free forever this way. Panic Attacks Workbook

With methods and exercises based on the author’s extensive clinical experience, Panic Attacks Workbook helps people understand the true nature of their panic attacks. It demonstrates the vicious cycle of habitual responses that lead to debilitating attacks, teaches how to halt this self-destructive process, and guides people along a proven path that promotes recovery. David Carbonell outlines such cognitive behavioral methods as diaphragmatic breathing, progressive exposure, desensitization, relaxation, keeping a panic diary, and much more. He shows how to cultivate a personal attitude that facilitates solutions rather than placing blame. He clearly explains how the very nature of panic leads people into a chronic cycle of anticipation, panic, and helplessness, and details how to overcome this pattern with innovative responses and an attitude of acceptance. Charts, worksheets, and program outlines help point the way through the workbook and on to recovery.

Overcoming Night Eating Syndrome

The statistics are powerful and alarming: Perhaps as many as 6 million Americans suffer from night eating syndrome, or NES, a newly identified eating disorder which describes behavior patterns in which an individual obsessively consumes more than half of his or her daily caloric intake after eight o’clock in the evening. More significant is the further finding that more than 33 percent of morbidly obese individuals, persons who are 100 or more pounds overweight, are affected by this disorder. Experts agree that NES shares characteristics of not only eating disorders but also sleep and mood disorders. Sufferers tend to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of anxiety and guilt, insomnia, or interrupted sleep. Typical NES behaviors include absent appetite during the day, a consistent pattern of eating more food after dinner than during the meal itself, and recurrent episodes of waking and eating throughout the night. This book offers a step-by-step strategy for managing and overcoming this disorder. From this book, you will first learn to identify the signs of NES, and then use journaling exercises to discover what automatic thoughts surround your night eating. Having identified the problematic behaviors, you’íll find out how to break theses patterns with healthier food choices, more structured mealtimes, and a series of relaxation and visualization techniques.

The Brain That Changes Itself

An astonishing new scientific discovery called neuroplasticity is overthrowing the centuries-old notion that the adult human brain is fixed and unchanging. It is, instead, able to change its own structure and function, even into old age. Psychiatrist and rersearcher Norman Doidge, M.D., travelled around the United States to meet the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity, and the people whose lives they’ve transformed — people whose mental limitations or brain damage were previously seen as unalterable, and whose conditions had long been dismissed as hopeless. We see a woman born with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole; a woman labeled retarded who cured her deficits with brain exercises and now cures those of others; blind people who learn to see; learning disorders cured; IQs raised; ageing brains rejuvenated; stroke patients recovering their faculties; children with cerebral palsy learning to move more gracefully; entrenched depression and anxiety disappearing; and lifelong character traits changed. Doidge takes us onto terrain that might seem fantastic. We learn that our thoughts can switch our genes on and off, altering our brain anatomy. We learn how people of average intelligence can, with brain exercises, improve their cognition and perception, develop muscle strength, or learn to play a musical instrument — simply by imagining doing so. Using personal stories from the heart of this neuroplasticity revolution, Dr Doidge has written an immensely moving, inspiring book that will permanently alter the way we look at our brains, human nature, and human potential.
