Brave New Brain

Here, leading neuroscientist Nancy Andreasen offers a state-of-the-art look at what we know about the human brain and the human genome–and shows how these two vast branches of knowledge are coming together in a boldly ambitious effort to conquer mental illness. Andreasen gives us an engaging and readable description of how it all works—from billions of neurons, to the tiny thalamus, to the moral monitor in our prefrontal cortex. She shows the progress made in mapping the human genome, whose 30,000 to 40,000 genes are almost all active in the brain. We read gripping stories of the people who develop mental illness, the friends and relatives who share their suffering, the physicians who treat them, and the scientists who study them so that better treatments can be found. Four major disorders are covered–schizophrenia, manic depression, anxiety disorders, and dementia–revealing what causes them and how they affect the mind and brain. Finally, the book shows how the powerful tools of genetics and neuroscience will be combined during the next decades to build healthier brains and minds. By revealing how combining genome mapping with brain mapping can unlock the mysteries of mental illness, Andreasen offers a remarkably fresh perspective on these devastating diseases.

TSA’s War on women? FOIA docs reveal more pat-down complaints filed

http://twitter.com/#!/MacFarlaneNews/status/273087422680666112

As Twitchy reported last week, a complaint was filed when a TSA agent exposed the breasts of Rep. Hall’s grandniece during a pat-down. The incident happened over two years ago, but was just brought to light when internal memos were obtained after a Freedom of Information Act request.

Today, reporter Scott MacFarlane continues his outstanding work of bringing TSA abuses to light.

Internal TSA memo reveals agency has reprimanded 5 employees, suspended 6 for using classified, “official” TSA info for “private purposes”

— Scott MacFarlane (@MacFarlaneNews) November 26, 2012

What private purposes? And what data was used for such purposes? Wait, there’s more.

Richmond, Va Airport says complaint about TSA allowing “felon” to work secure checkpoint has been “resolved to airport’s satisfaction”

— Scott MacFarlane (@MacFarlaneNews) November 26, 2012

What hasn’t been dealt with? The complaints over the TSA’s use of pat-downs and the allegations that women undergo pat-downs more than men.

US Rep Rush Holt (D-NJ), Sen Olympia Snowe (R-ME) Rep Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) have filed formal complaints with TSA about its use of pat-downs

— Scott MacFarlane (@MacFarlaneNews) November 26, 2012

In his complaint to TSA, Rep Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) says females often report being patted-down while their husbands are bypassed

— Scott MacFarlane (@MacFarlaneNews) November 26, 2012

Of course, anyone reading Twitchy or Twitter would know that this seems to be the pattern.
