Covid-19 Therapy Session- Managing Fear and Anxiety- A Therapist’s Advice- With Monica Blume

So many people are anxious and worried about covid-19, and for good reason, it’s disrupting lives, harming the economy, and is quite dangerous. In this little therapy session, we talk about Monica’s approach to fear, worry and anxiety, and her essential advice on the topic. Today I’ve got a special guest Monica Blume- here to talk about Covid-19 and what she’s saying to dozens of her clients in therapy sessions each week. 1. Fear and anxiety around Covid-19 is normal, real, human. This cannot not affect your emotions. That is not you losing control but instead you feeling about this Coronavirus pandemic. This is you being human. It is uncomfortable, not weak or unhealthy.2. Realize the strengths you are already using; know you have many others to help you through. It’s easy to doubt our own abilities to handle hard things, but we have strength that reaches far beyond what we have tested.3. Seeing and being a part of the beauty of the human reaction: when you’re struggling with issues you can’t control, focus on things you can. Help/serve others when your own stuff is overwhelming.4. Have the experience. This is a momentous time in our lives, experiencing something together as an entire world population. It will be a major point in the history of our lives. You’re going to have it, so experience it. “Buy the ticket, take the ride.” Hunter S. The Woman Who Cracked the Anxiety Code

The true story of the little-known mental-health pioneer who revolutionized how we see the defining problem of our era: anxiety. Panic, depression, sorrow, guilt, disgrace, obsession, sleeplessness, low confidence, loneliness, agoraphobia…The international bestseller Hope and Help for Your Nerves, first published in 1962 and still in print, has helped tens of millions of people to overcome all of these, and continues to do so. Yet even as letters and phone calls from readers around the world flooded in, thanking her for helping to improve–and in some cases to save–their lives, Dr Claire Weekes was dismissed as underqualified and overly populist by the psychiatric establishment. Just who was this woman? Claire Weekes was driven by a restless and unconventional mind that saw her become the first woman to earn a Doctor of Science degree at Australia’s oldest university, win global plaudits for her research into evolution, and take a turn as a travel agent, before embarking on a career in medicine. But it was a mistaken diagnosis of tuberculosis that would set her heart racing and push her towards integrating all she’d learned into a practical treatment for anxiety–a tried-and-true method now seen as state-of-the-art 30 years after her death. This book is the first to tell her remarkable story.

Exercise for Mood and Anxiety

Exercise has long been touted anecdotally as an effective tool for mood improvement, but only recently has rigorous science caught up with these claims. There is now overwhelming evidence that regular exercise can help relieve low mood-from feelings of stress and anxiety to full depressive episodes. With Exercise for Mood and Anxiety, Michael Otto and Jasper Smits, well-known authorities on cognitive behavioral therapy, take their empirically-based mood regulation strategy from the clinic to the general public. Written for those with diagnosed mood disorders as well as those who simply need a new strategy for managing the low mood and stress that is an everyday part of life, this book provides readers with step-by-step guidance on how to start and maintain an exercise program geared towards improving mood, with a particular emphasis on understanding the relationship between mood and motivation. Readers learn to attend carefully to mood states prior to and following physical activity in order to leverage the full benefits of exercise, and that the trick to maintaining an exercise program is not in applying more effort, but in arranging one’s environment so that less effort is needed. As a result readers not only acquire effective strategies for adopting a successful program, but are introduced to a broader philosophy for enhancing overall well-being. Providing patient vignettes, rich examples, and extensive step-by-step guidance on overcoming the obstacles that prevent adoption of regular exercise for mood, Exercise for Mood and Anxiety is a unique translation of scientific principles of clinical and social psychology into an action-based strategy for mood change.
