SAMHSA’s National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day 2017 event—“Partnering for Help and Hope”—took place on May 4. The event’s highly interactive talk show format focused on the importance of integrating behavioral health and primary care for children, youth, and young adults with mental and/or substance use disorders. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Thomas E. Price, presented Special Recognition Awards to Olympic medalists Michael Phelps and Allison Schmitt for speaking candidly about their experiences with mental health and working to support youth and young adults with similar experiences. On July 27 and July 28, the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI) Working Group of the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director (ACD) hosted a public workshop on the scientific, methodological and practical considerations to inform the incorporation of mobile and personal technologies in the national research cohort of one million or more volunteers. The workshop will be was held at the Intel Corporation campus in Santa Clara, California, and was videocast.
This workshop built on the unique scientific questions developed during the April 28–29 workshop, digital health data perspectives shared during the May 28-29 workshop, and the participant engagement and health equity discussions at the July 1-2 workshop. Social media is widely used by adolescents, these technology allow opportunities for teens to display and describe health attitudes, intentions and behaviors. These new technologies provide an innovative means to investigate adolescent health. For the past 7 years, we have been investigating how adolescents choose to display health behaviors on social media including substance use and depression symptoms. This talk will provide an overview of our methods and key findings, and illustrate challenges and opportunities in how adolescents interact with social media.

Climate Change has been described as both the biggest public health threat and the biggest public health opportunity of the 21st century. This talk reviews the human health consequences of climate change, and review approaches to protecting people, both through mitigation (or primary prevention) and adaptation (or public health preparedness). It will also consider some “meta” issues such as how to communicate about climate change and how to maintain hope and avoid despair.
This Public Health Summit brought key stakeholders together from academia, industry and government to examine barriers to research on workplace mental health, implementation of workplace interventions and services and best practices for overcoming barriers to research and interventions.
