APL Forum: Biotechnology for the Nation – BioToday Spotlight Talks

The last decade has ushered in advances in biotechnology that have opened up a new world of possibilities for biological solutions to a diverse array of challenges. Current research efforts span biofuel production to genetic therapies to living sensors. Concomitant with these developments, concerns surrounding misuse of this technology have given rise to new fears of next-generation biological threats that could be generated through malicious intent or possibly by uninformed use. We will examine how key developments in biotechnology have set the stage for today, highlight the current state of the art and where new technologies are being developed, and conclude with the need to consider policy and thoughtful technology development.Speakers: John Glass, Professor, J.
