Fingerpainting Doesn’t Mean What It Used To. Check Out These Amazing Works!

Spanish artist Jaime Sanjuan Ocabo creates detailed and lifelike (though slightly surreal) images using only an iPad and his fingertips. Just like traditional painting methods, Ocabo builds up layers to create his paintings, beginning with the basics and adding more and more (and more!) detail as the painting evolves.

He creates still-life paintings, portraits and landscapes, all which look real enough to touch, but each with a surrealist twist. Solid objects have liquid, splashy edges, while liquids hold their shape.

Still Life (Naturaleza Vida)

Cutbacks (Recortes)

Digital media changed the art world over the last several years. It still takes training and skill to create masterpieces like Ocabo’s, but digital media makes art more accessible. You no longer need studio space and painting supplies. All you need is an iPad and an art app. Digital tools don’t come cheap, but they save space and resources otherwise required to create art.

Ocabo, who studied fine arts and wrote his doctoral thesis on art and technology, knows this first hand. Despite his serious credentials, he was unable to find employment for four years after graduating, something many twentysomethings can relate to. Due to lack of funds, he gave up painting. But after receiving an iPad a year ago, he discovered a way to create art that didn’t require extra space or money.

The Bubble (La Burbuja)

Breakfast Light (Luz de Desayuno)

King Snail (El Caracol Rey)

Self Portrait (Autorretrato)

Nature (Natura)

Long Wait (Larga Espera)

Broken Souls (Almas Rotas)

Black Hole ( Agujero Negro)

“With the help of this tool, I do not need a studio, and there is no need to buy materials to create my paintings,” he explains, I still have no job, but now I feel alive!”

We hope that Ocabo can find gainful employment in a field he loves. Until then, it’s important for him to have a creative outlet, and one that doesn’t drain his funds. Based on his talent, though, we’re sure he’ll go far!

What This Company Did With Legos In Their Office Is Amazing. Can I Work There?

How cool would it be to work in an office made entirely out of Lego bricks? While we’re not quite there yet, Hamburg, Germany-based creative studio NPIRE is a lot closer than most offices.

For the last year, employees at NPIRE slowly built a colorful wall of Legos to divide their kitchen space from the hallway. The finished product is the coolest piece of office furniture you’ve ever seen.

According to NPIRE, they used around 55,000 individual Lego bricks to build the wall. It took them almost a full year to finish building it.

That’s a TON of Lego bricks.

The archway taking shape.

The completed wall is a little bigger than nine feet tall and nine feet wide.

This looks like one of the best jobs ever.

Here is the final product. I need one of these in my apartment.

(Via: Design Taxi)

I’m not saying that the offices of ViralNova aren’t nice, but I think we could all really benefit a Lego wall (or two) of our own. Please?

Need A Last-Minute Halloween Costume? Check Out These Simple Mask Ideas.

We all know how it goes. You start the Halloween season with high hopes of crafting a costume that will blow everyone away. You carry the image of it in your head. You tell yourself that this will be the weekend when you finally get to the store to put your masterpiece together.

This never happens as planned, because you have those obnoxious responsibilities that get in the way. Pretty soon, there are less than ten days till Halloween and you still have nothing. Your options are to run to one of those pop-up Halloween stores and try to find something amid the wreckage. Or, you have to be that person who shows up with no costume except for your sheepish excuses.

…but not anymore. Do you have some cardboard? What about tape and scissors? Then you’re set.

The Skull mask

This looks complex, but you can make this yourself.

Human(ish)

Stormtrooper

Designer Steve Wintercroft created a series of mask templates available for immediate download. The templates are purchased and downloaded, then printed on regular paper. The paper is then glued to thin cardboard (like a cereal box), cut out, and taped together as per the instructions. The masks are inexpensive, running at £4.50, or about $7.25 USD. You can choose from a variety of animals, including a bear, a fox, a cat, a pig, and an owl. You can also choose from a skull, a Stormtrooper, a pumpkin, and a pretty unnerving human. Because the patterns are simply printed out, the masks can be decorated in any way you like. Depending on the complexity of the pattern, the masks can take anywhere from one to four hours to complete.

With a simple, one-color paint job and the right outfit on, these geometric masks can turn your getup into a striking costume. They’re also simple enough to put together that they can be a good family project if you’re trying to deck out several people.

Hopefully these masks help you in your Halloween costume quest. After all, if you can’t spare 1 to 4 hours to put together a Halloween mask, you probably don’t have time for Halloween in the first place.

As Creative As This Upside Down House Is, Look At The Bathroom. How’s That Work?

Dirk Oster is an interesting man from Germany who has a penchant for building upside down houses. The investor had his contractors build this unique house for a local zoo in Getorff, Germany… although I can’t for the life of me understand why. But, for whatever reason, he built the upside down house and to this day it remains a huge attraction for the zoo (who may want to consider hosting better animals).

The 23-foot tall house is standing on the point of its roof, supported by steel beams running through the attic.

The house was also built on a slight incline so it would change the viewer’s perspective, further giving the rooms a “funhouse” like quality.

Everything that is on the floor/ceiling is attached with screws and hangs precariously over the visitors’ heads.

That includes tables, chairs, beds, bowls and even a 100lb wardrobe.

If you visit the house, may I recommend using the restroom beforehand because it doesn’t look like this would end too well.

Okay, this house officially won me over. Now, I’m just waiting for the ZOO to be converted into an upside down zoo.
