How Brain Games Can Reduce Your Anxiety and Depression

Did you know that uncontrollable worry is an anxiety disorder that typically starts in childhood? It’s a disorder that is usually life long and comes and goes over the course of your life. Uncontrolled worry is one of the hallmarks of Generalized anxiety disorder. This is different from obsessive compulsive disorder where you have obsessional thoughts and or rituals you have to perform. It’s also different from panic disorder where you have sudden attacks of anxiety with a lot of physical symptoms. A sign that your anxiety is causing functional impairment or interfering with your daily activities is when it races out of control at night and keeps you awake. So there’s a loss of control of your ability to tune out these thoughts or distract yourself from them. If you’re one who has worked hard at meditating and using exercise to reduce your anxiety, you may be able to turn down the volume on these thoughts, but it’s like a script running in the background that you can’t completely quiet. That negative commentary that you can’t make go away, can start to make you feel depressed and hopeless. A current theory for why you can’t control your anxious thoughts is that uncontrolled worry comes from deficits in attentional control and it’s effect on your working memory. Attentional control is a higher level brain function called an executive function. If you have good attentional control, you can sustain focus on a task and filter out things that don’t relate to the task at hand. You are also able to cleanly move your attention from one task to another without the previous task distracting you from doing the new task. The ability to do this is based on the strength of your neural pathways that make these actions possible. So with anxiety and depression, these nerve pathways are disrupted or not functioning properly. This makes you unable to filter information and let go of the thoughts that cause you distress. Something that shows real promise for helping you get more control over your thoughts is brain training games or cognitive training. These specialized exercises, boost attentional control and improve your working memory. That improvement in your executive function has positive effects on your emotional functioning. The brain training exercises are not just something used by researchers. There are commercially available options that can be used on a self-help basis. One such company is called Cognifit. They have a version available for clinicians and educators, but they also have a version for personal use. You’re able to take a cognitive assessment to see what your weaknesses are, then choose the games that can help you build up your skills. On this issues of brain training, take a look at this video I did talking about learning to play a musical instrument to improve your mental capacity and brain plasticity https://youtu.be/AHgjZJKfGhs. It’s just another tool in your arsenal to improve your mental health. References Stefanopoulou E, Hirsch CR, Hayes S, Adlam A, Coker S. The Medical Basis of Psychiatry

Four years have passed since the last edition (3rd) of this book was published. In the intervening years, several reviews of this book have provided highly encouraging remarks about the value of this book in transmitting information on classification and treatment of psychiatric disorders to the audience. We are proposing to revise all chapters with an eye on accuracy and ease of use, and this is an especially timely endeavor with the upcoming publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual V. All the appropriate new information on biology, etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders will be added to the current proposed edition. It is our goal to recruit the same authors (if possible) who contributed to the previous edition. While all chapters will be updated (see TOC), those marked by asterisks will be the most likely to undergo more revision. Psychiatry has emerged as a burgeoning scientific field with major advances in etiology and treatment of several disorders. Just as there was excitement in the anatomic advances that took place a hundred years ago when Emil Kraepelin and his collaborators took on the enormous task of classification of psychiatric disorders based on rational scientific thinking, new advances in genetics, biochemistry, neuroanatomy and pharmacotherapy of mental disorders have brought us even closer to a better understanding of complex disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and even autism. The major goal of the previous edition of this classic book was to update the busy clinician, psychiatric resident and medical student with the most up-to-date information on etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. This goal remains the focus of the fourth edition of this book. In this updated and expanded edition, the reader will be provided with the most contemporary information and literature supported by a close survey of the field. This new edition of this classic title, with its focus on biologic and medical aspects of psychiatry, will continue to be of significant help to all interested in the scientific practice of psychiatry.

He gave his life for it, and said the gates of hell won’t prevail against it. Jesus himself is the foundation stone of this church. And Scripture tells us his glory and wisdom dwell in it. At Pentecost, he sent his Holy Spirit to establish the church. And he has gifted it with anointed servants — pastors, teachers, apostles, prophets and evangelists — for the purpose of building it up. It’s clear the Lord desires to bless his church. So, why does Revelation 2 present such a fearsome picture of Christ, when he appears to his people? John writes that Jesus comes to the church with flaming eyes and a thundering voice: “In the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man… His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow: and his eyes were as a flame of fire; and his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword” (Revelation 1:13-16). Now, Revelation is the summation of God’s Word. It describes the end of all things. And here is the first image of Christ we see in this book. Why does Jesus appear so foreboding here? And why does he speak so piercingly to his church? John writes that Christ’s words are as sharp as swords, cutting down to the marrow. Remember, this was the apostle who leaned his head on Jesus’ bosom. But now he finds himself on his face: “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead” (1:17). The Lord himself explains his awesome appearance: “All the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works” (2:23). The fact is, Christ loves his church. And that’s the very reason he comes to search it. He comes to correct his people in love, to purify them. First of all, Jesus tells John not to be afraid. “He laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last” (1:17). Then Christ says, in essence, “I want everyone in my church to know I’ve come to search their inner man. And I do it with eyes of fire and a thunder that shakes the soul. I won’t mince words — what I have to say will both pierce and heal. But I won’t allow any child of mine to continue in apathy or blindness. My eyes and mouth will pierce through every facade.” Christ saw something in his church. And he instructed John to write down his words and send them to the seven “angels” of the churches. This refers to his ministers, calling them the stars in his hands (see 1:16). He’s telling John, “I love these servants. I’ve called and anointed them. And now you’re to deliver my words to them.” As a pastor myself, I have to wonder: what must it have been like to open such a letter from John? “Unto the pastor of the church in New York: Thus saith the Lord, concerning your congregation…” Now imagine what those seven ministers felt. ………….. @ahavajerusalem #ahavajerusalem http://ahavajerusalem.com About David Wilkerson David Wilkerson was the Founding Pastor of Times Square Church in New York City. He was called to New York in 1958 to minister to gang members and drug addicts, as told in the best-selling book, The Cross and the Switchblade. In 1987, David Wilkerson returned to “the crossroads of the world” to establish Times Square Church. As a pastor of the church, he faithfully led this congregation, delivering powerful biblical messages that encourage righteous living and complete reliance on God. David Wilkerson had a strong burden to encourage and strengthen pastors throughout the world. From 1999 to 2008, he traveled around the globe holding conferences for Christian ministers.
