New York Times taken offline; Syrian Electronic Army suspected

The New York Times has confirmed that its website has been taken offline by hackers, likely as part of a “malicious external attack.”

The Syrian Electronic Army, which has quite an impressive record of hacking into media outlets, hasn’t claimed responsibility, but some are already pointing fingers.

Uh oh: Some are reporting problems with the Wall Street Journal as well.

The New York Times isn’t the only one whose DNS seems to have been taken over. This is big.

Someone calling themselves the Syrian Electronic Army has claimed credit for hacking Twitter.

Business Insider is reporting that the disappearing Wall Street Journal paywall isn’t the work of hackers but an attempt by the Journal’s marketing folks to scoop up some of the Times’ displaced readership. Clever, or cold?

Update: The Huffington Post UK has been compromised as well.

Iraq claims Islamic State group has captured 2,500 chemical rockets

http://twitter.com/#!/LizSly/status/486645700264878080

The Associated Press Tuesday night is reporting a claim by Iraq that “the Islamic State extremist group has taken control of a vast former chemical weapons facility northwest of Baghdad, where remnants of 2,500 degraded chemical rockets filled decades ago with the deadly nerve agent sarin are stored.”

The U.S. government, for its part, has “played down the threat from the takeover, saying there are no intact chemical weapons and it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to use the material for military purposes.”

So, are these WMDs, former WMDs or just an example of ISIS propaganda?

When You Hug An Animal — Big Or Small — They Know You Mean Well

January 21 was National Hugging Day — and before you say, ‘Wait…there’s a day for that?’ let me reassure you that of course there is, and it’s incredibly important. So it may not be equal to Independence Day, but some might argue it’s a close second.

Here to show you just how important — oh yeah, and adorable — it is are the incredible folks over at Edgar’s Mission in Australia.
