How do the Ferguson police mix up the sex of the wounded officer?

As Twitchy reported earlier, there were multiple incorrect reports that the officer wounded in Ferguson, Missouri was a woman. How exactly do the police mess something like that up?

Tweeters are wondering the same thing:

What a weird thing to get wrong RT @GPollowitz: Note the police have changed their earlier report: Officer who was shot in #ferguson is male

NYT still reporting officer shot in Ferguson was a woman. St. Louis County police chief confirms it was a male. pic.twitter.com/2zPgrbmBlW

OK, this seems pretty basic… RT @GPollowitz: Note the police have changed their earlier report: Officer who was shot in #ferguson is male

And we’ll leave it at this:

@MZHemingway @GPollowitz But these days who knows what male even means? Was the officer Cisgendered?

@BlueBoxDave @GPollowitz just because he was assigned a penis-designated sex doesn't mean anything, you're right.
