Have You Have You Ever Noticed There Are Actually Two Types Of Popcorn?

Grab some popcorn and get ready to learn. Inspired by this answer on Quora.

1. First things first, you can’t make just any type of corn pop.

You have to use – yep – popping corn, a type of corn that, crucially, has a hard outer shell. Just in case you’ve never made popcorn yourself and haven’t seen it before, this is what it looks like before it pops:

2. When you heat the popcorn up, the tiny bit of water inside the kernel changes into steam and expands.

When there’s no more room to expand inside the kernel and the pressure gets too high, it explodes, as demonstrated in this GIF from a video by the Slow Mo Guys.

3. According to The Popcorn Board:

Around 212 degrees [Fahrenheit] the water turns into steam and changes the starch inside each kernel into a superhot gelatinous goop. The kernel continues to heat to about 347 degrees. The pressure inside the grain will reach 135 pounds per square inch before finally bursting the hull open.

As it explodes, steam inside the kernel is released. The soft starch inside the popcorn becomes inflated and spills out, cooling immediately and forming into the odd shape we know and love.

4. But the fun doesn’t end there. There are actually two types of popcorn: mushroom and butterfly.

According to Speciality Corns by Arnel R. Hallauer, butterfly popcorn (right) “is associated with tenderness and freedom from hulls” whereas mushroom popcorn (left) is more suited to coating with flavourings because it can withstand handling.

5. The two types form in slightly different ways.

With mushroom popcorn, the kernel expands evenly. But with butterfly popcorn, the starch inside comes out of wherever the kernel’s skin breaks, basically turning it inside out. You can see butterfly popcorn forming in these GIFs:

Fingerpainting Doesn’t Mean What It Used To. Check Out These Amazing Works!

Spanish artist Jaime Sanjuan Ocabo creates detailed and lifelike (though slightly surreal) images using only an iPad and his fingertips. Just like traditional painting methods, Ocabo builds up layers to create his paintings, beginning with the basics and adding more and more (and more!) detail as the painting evolves.

He creates still-life paintings, portraits and landscapes, all which look real enough to touch, but each with a surrealist twist. Solid objects have liquid, splashy edges, while liquids hold their shape.

Still Life (Naturaleza Vida)

Cutbacks (Recortes)

Digital media changed the art world over the last several years. It still takes training and skill to create masterpieces like Ocabo’s, but digital media makes art more accessible. You no longer need studio space and painting supplies. All you need is an iPad and an art app. Digital tools don’t come cheap, but they save space and resources otherwise required to create art.

Ocabo, who studied fine arts and wrote his doctoral thesis on art and technology, knows this first hand. Despite his serious credentials, he was unable to find employment for four years after graduating, something many twentysomethings can relate to. Due to lack of funds, he gave up painting. But after receiving an iPad a year ago, he discovered a way to create art that didn’t require extra space or money.

The Bubble (La Burbuja)

Breakfast Light (Luz de Desayuno)

King Snail (El Caracol Rey)

Self Portrait (Autorretrato)

Nature (Natura)

Long Wait (Larga Espera)

Broken Souls (Almas Rotas)

Black Hole ( Agujero Negro)

“With the help of this tool, I do not need a studio, and there is no need to buy materials to create my paintings,” he explains, I still have no job, but now I feel alive!”

We hope that Ocabo can find gainful employment in a field he loves. Until then, it’s important for him to have a creative outlet, and one that doesn’t drain his funds. Based on his talent, though, we’re sure he’ll go far!

Ex-Weiner intern: ‘Of course I accept’ Morgan’s apology for calling me a ‘slutbag’

http://twitter.com/#!/Olivianuzzi/status/362541306758701060

Grrl power!

After Anthony Weiner’s spokeswoman Barbara Morgan called former campaign intern Olivia Nuzzi “slutbag,” “bitch” and “twat,” among other things, she apologized for getting caught using “inappropriate language in what I thought was an off-the-record conversation.”

Nuzzi took to Twitter this morning to announce her acceptance of the apology. Will she revise her Twitter bio?

For now, the bio remains.

Vile retweet by NYT’s Nick Kristof compares pro-Israel AIPAC to pigs

Kristof turned to professional anti-Semite MJ Rosenberg for that pearl of wisdom.

Mohamed Morsi is beaming.

The Free Beacon has much more, including Kristof’s history of taking heat for his writings about Israel.
