These College Students Got the Shock of a Lifetime in their Basement

When you live in an old house, you experience a lot of seemingly unnatural noises that are the result of the framework, plumbing and other natural causes. A creak or door slamming at 3:15am can send chills up and down anyone’s spine, no matter how little they believe in ghosts. That’s why a group of college students decided to investigate their very strange and noisy basement.

Renters of an off-campus home at Ohio State University were disturbed when they started hearing strange noises coming from a locked room in the basement. They believed it to be haunted.

As it turns out, the room was occupied by an inhabitant they never expected. Jeremy. He was another student… and he was living in their basement.

Maintenance workers knocked down a locked door in the students’ basement, which is where they found Jeremy (living there for free). Then, they changed their locks and let the “ghostly” inhabitant move out. Great campus housing isn’t cheap after all.

You might not believe in ghosts. But you probably believe in unwanted occupants now.

Then, the horsehair worm will “penetrate through the gut of the cricket and get into the body cavity, where they then grow from a tiny, tiny larva to something that’s now on the average of a foot long,” parasitologist Ben Hanelt of the University of New Mexico told Wired.

Hugh Loxdale, president of the London-based Royal Entomological Society, told National Geographic it’s “one of the most horrific things I’ve ever seen,” adding that “It makes the science fiction film Alien look pretty tame in comparison.”
