Here’s an excerpt from 7 Days Middle East:
A new social networking site aimed at Muslims is to be launched, with its founders insisting it will be strictly policed to avoid offending members.
Creators of Salamworld, which is due to go live during Ramadan, aim to have 50 million users on their facebook rival within five years.
Salamworld’s communications director, Said Sadov, told 7DAYS that topics such as homosexuality and other practices forbidden in Muslim culture will not be permitted on the site but that religiously-sensitive discussions will be allowed. An estimated 300 million Muslims regularly surf the internet.
“This is the very reason for Salamworld. Many Muslims say they feel intimidated by such groups on facebook and other social network sites. They want their own space free from such groups, but that is not to say that gay Muslims can’t stay on facebook. It’s up to them, but such groups won’t have a place on Salamworld,” he said.
Sadov added a panel of renowned Islamic scholars will decide what will be allowed on the site so that Muslims feel comfortable when they log on.
