Delhi Gang Rapist Says A Woman “Should Just Be Silent And Allow The Rape”

Filmmaker Leslee Udwin recently wrapped up interviews with one of the four men convicted of raping and murdering a 23-year-old woman in 2012.

A Delhi court on Tuesday instructed police to prevent the broadcast and publication of India’s Daughter in India, BBC reported. The filmmakers responded that halting the broadcast of their documentary amounts to a violation of freedom of expression. In 2012, four men were sentenced to death for the horrific gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical intern in Delhi.

The woman boarded a bus with a friend. The four men beat the woman’s friend and then each of them raped the woman before they beat her with an iron rod. The driver of the bus was a 20-year-old named Mukesh Singh.

Singh is currently appealing his death sentence. Documentary filmmaker Leslee Udwin conducted 16 hours of interviews with Singh for her film India’s Daughter.

While Singh denies that he took part in the assault, he did not show any remorse for what happened. “A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy,” Singh told Udwin.

“Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes. About 20% of girls are good,” he continued. “When being raped, she shouldn’t fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape. Then they’d have dropped her off after ‘doing her’, and only hit the boy.”

Singh believes that making sexual assault punishable by death will only make things even more dangerous for girls.

“Now when they rape, they won’t leave the girl like we did,” he said.

Singh’s comments have caused an intense amount of controversy since the BBC published them.

I can’t even express my feelings on this article. ‘Delhi rapist says victim shouldn’t have fought back’ http://t.co/mHgPy7R5sb

The scary thing isn’t what the Delhi rapist said. The scary thing is that most of the country agrees to every word he said.

— SatanBhagat (@Utsav Chakraborty)

There is also a large contingent of Indians who don’t agree with giving Singh any publicity.

The Delhi rapist’s reported comments to BBC are no different from the average citizen’s views on rape. Why r ppl surprised? #Delhigangrape
