Obama Friday Night Document Drop – Solyndra

From CNN:

The Obama administration turned over 432 pages of e-mail communications and other documents Friday to congressional Republicans investigating the collapse of the solar energy firm Solyndra, the White House said.

The hard-copy and electronic documents include e-mail communications from the offices of the president and vice president, the White House said in a letter to Reps. Fred Upton of Michigan and Cliff Stearns of Florida.

“These documents, like the over 187,000 pages previously provided by Executive Branch agencies, demonstrate what we have said throughout the course of this investigation: decisions on the Solyndra loan guarantee were made on the merits by the Department of Energy,” wrote Kathryn H. Ruemmler and Cynthia C. Hogan, counsels to the president and vice president, respectively.

“None of the documents support the committee’s allegations about favoritism to campaign contributors or improper White House involvement in the decision-making process,” the counsels wrote.

From Politico:

White House energy adviser Heather Zichal is scheduled to meet next week with  House Republicans for an interview about Solyndra, according to a source  familiar with the investigation.

Zichal’s meeting with the Energy and Commerce subpanel investigating the  failed California solar company will happen behind closed doors and won’t  involve a transcript. Those details were part of an agreement reached last month between Republicans and the  White House that circumvented threats of a subpoena.

From the Hill:

The latest White House documents delivered to House Republicans on Friday again highlight the extent to which senior administration officials braced for the fallout as Solyndra – a company President Obama had personally visited – was about to go under.

A White House memo that noted the danger of “imminent bankruptcy” at the end of August 2011 says, “OMB, DPC and NEC have been working with press and OLA to be prepared for this news to break.”

The White House document notes that the Treasury Department, OMB and other White House offices agreed that no more money should be provided because there was a “near-zero chance” that the company could survive.

Taking a tour with Barbara Boxer:

Senator Boxer tours Solyndra in Fremont

Friday, February 05, 2010

Senator Boxer tours Solyndra, a Fremont-based company that manufactures thin-film, tube-shaped solar panels

And a thank you from Dianne Feinstein.

This is a major milestone for California’s solar industry,” Senator Feinstein said. “This federal loan guarantee of $535 million will enable Solyndra to secure affordable financing – at a time when credit is extremely tight – in order to build and operate a commercial-scale facility to manufacture the next generation of rooftop solar systems.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu has pledged that his department will act as an engine for innovation – and this loan guarantee program is an important part of that effort. So, I’d like to extend my thanks to Secretary Chu for his leadership.”

I Didn’t Think A Murderer In Prison Could Bring A Tear To My Eye, But This Did It.

When prisoners are held in solitary confinement they are put in small, windowless cells for 22 to 24 hours a day. The United Nations has denounced solitary confinement as torture. The prisoners experience severe depression, sensory deprivation among other psychological effects. A prison rights group wanted to give inmates locked in a super-maximum security prison the chance to see images they were desperate to see. These are the touching photos they requested.

His own auntie’s house.

A stained glass window a prisoner liked.

The Chicago skyline.

South King and 63rd on the South Side of Chicago.

A photograph of the inmate and three wild lions.

The Michael Jordan statue.

A picture of his mother (she passed away the year before), a castle, a Hummer and a big pile of money.

The Puerto Rican flag.

The Masonic Temple.

The downtown Christmas tree.

The Navy Pier.

Genesee Street in Downtown Waukegan, Illinois.

The members of Tamms Year Ten fighting for the men at Tamms.

A vigil at Bald Knob Cross held for the inmates.

Some inmates asked their Department of Corrections photos to be placed on different backgrounds so they could be sent to their families.

A boy and girl, in their Sunday best, sitting side by side on a piano bench, with a single rose on the keys (this photo was a present for the inmate’s wife).

Several inmates requested images of the area where Chicago public housing project Robert Taylor Homes used to be, and what it looks like now.

One inmate asked for a picture of a friend that will write to them.

The prison-rights group is called Tamms Year Ten and although Illinois prison policy prohibits the prisoners from hanging the photos on their walls, the group still makes the photos for those locked away in a supermax, just to give them a glimmer of hope and happiness. Seeing what the prisoners asked for gives you a glimpse into what they yearn for or miss on the outside. They’ve made mistakes – terrible mistakes – but they are still human beings with feelings. And their requested photos show it. Sources

This Tiny Dog Was Terrified Of Everything Until Her Best Friend Came Along

We often call someone who’s always frightened a scaredy cat, but in the case of this Italian greyhound, you might call her a scaredy dog.

When Weezy was dropped off at an animal shelter in Alberta, the pup was scared of just about everything. Anything from human contact, squeaky toys, or even the buzzing of a fly would send the greyhound into fearful trembles. Her irrational fear was so bad that the first family that tried to adopt her from the animal shelter returned her the next day because the panicked dog was too much for them to handle.

But when Sarah Mavro heard about Weezy, she was willing to drive more than two hours to pick up the dog and take her home. Little did Mavro know at the time that her future baby boy would be just what the doctor ordered when it came to calming Weezy’s nerves.

Before Weezy could go home with her new family, her teeth were in such terrible condition that all but two of them had to be removed, causing the dog’s tongue to hang from her mouth most of the time.

Upon arriving at the Mavro’s, Weezy was given a security blanket to hide in when things got too be too much for her tiny heart to handle.

It took Weezy quite some time to fully learn to trust Mavro and her family.

Coming soon: US Senator Erick Erickson?

http://twitter.com/#!/IcarusPundit/status/273565166631800834

RedState Editor Erick Erickson said today that he is “prayerfully considering”  a primary challenge to U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, a Republican from Georgia. Erickson has been forcefully advocating for a primary challenge to Chambliss on RedState, and said today on his radio show that “serious people” have approached him about becoming the challenger himself. Peach Pundit editor Charlie Harper broke the story online, and has been in personal contact with Erickson about the subject. Here’s his take:

I’ve traded a couple of texts with him and would say this isn’t a publicity stunt. Nor has he decided he’s running and is being coy about it. It’s something he needs to think about. So he will.

Reaction so far has been mixed:

@sissywillis I would be happy to support @ewerickson in a primary challenge against @saxbychambliss to represent Georgia in the US Senate

@icaruspundit Chambliss vs Erickson.Wouldn’t that be a fun one to watch? As a Democrat, I say “Go for it, Erick!!!”

— Larry Felton Johnson (@larryfeltonj) November 28, 2012

This is apparently a recent development, as one week ago Erickson forcefully shot down the idea when someone mentioned it on Twitter.

@mikedevinelaw No

— Erick Erickson (@EWErickson) November 20, 2012

So, are you ready for the first blogger in the United States Senate?

Update: Erickson tweets about how he would vote if he were Senator:

If I were a senator I’d object to every UC, until Obamacare was repealed. Shut down the Senate lest they shut down America

— Erick Erickson (@EWErickson) November 28, 2012

If I were a Senator, I’d sure as heck not have voted for TARP.

— Erick Erickson (@EWErickson) November 28, 2012

Update: Georgia Tip Sheet has the audio from Erickson’s show. A partial transcript:

For a week now, I’ve been getting calls to see if I would challenge Saxby Chambliss, once he really got into the whole ‘raising taxes issue,’” Erickson said in the opening segment of his radio show Tuesday. “Well, the pace quickened. I got a lot of people pledging a lot of money in the last couple of days if I did something like this. And I’ve been very adamant, I wasn’t going to do it, but after a few conversations today with a few heavy hitters in Washington, D.C. and some here in Georgia, I should at least consider it.
