These are disorders that share features\r\nof excessive fear and anxiety and related behavioral disturbances. Although\r\nboth fear and anxiety are close, related fear elicits an immediate\r\nfight-or-flight response to a real threat that has already presented itself.\r\nFor instance an encounter with a wild animal.\r\nIn comparison, anxiety is more of a hyper-vigilant state where an individual is\r\nextremely sensitive to detect potential threats that may never occur.\r\nFor instance, an individual may be anxious about public speaking because\r\nthey anticipate that they will embarrass themselves. Like most mental health\r\nproblems, anxiety disorders appear to be caused by a combination of biological,\r\nfactors, psychological factors, and challenging life experiences. all anxiety\r\ndisorders have irrational and excessive fears apprehensive intense feelings and\r\ndifficulty managing daily tasks. Other symptoms include anxious thoughts,\r\npredictions, and beliefs, avoidance of feared situations, subtle avoidances such\r\nas talking more when anxious to describe oneself, safety behaviors like having a\r\ncellphone on hand for help, and physiological responses such as\r\nincreased heart rate. There are many types of anxiety disorders including\r\ngeneralized anxiety disorder which is one of the most common types of anxiety\r\ndisorders in older adults.\r\n\r\nIt affects 2-5% of the population with\r\nmore women affected than men. Over an individual’s lifetime chances of\r\ndeveloping generalized anxiety disorder are as high as 9%. With respect to\r\nethnicity, people of European descent are more likely to be affected than\r\npeople of non-European descent and anxiety disorders occur more frequently\r\nin developed countries than non-developed countries. Generalized anxiety\r\ndisorder is characterized by excessive uncontrollable worry about everyday\r\nthings including social situations. This excessive worry occurs for at least six\r\nmonths and often interferes with one’s daily life. This worrying can be\r\nmanifested in physical symptoms including restlessness, fatigue,\r\nirritability, muscle tension, and difficulty concentrating and sleeping.\r\nThe severity of the generalized anxiety disorder can vary with those having the mild to the moderate form being able to function socially with treatment and those who\r\nhave severe generalized anxiety disorder finding it difficult to perform simple\r\ndaily tasks. Although anxiety can be daunting, there\r\nare many ways to cope with it. First and foremost, it is important to realize that\r\nyou can’t control everything. You must avoid placing pressure on yourself to be\r\nperfect in everything you do.\r\n\r\n
