Report: David Shuster joining Al Jazeera America; Tweeters note perfect match

http://twitter.com/#!/jpodhoretz/status/359272854589685760

Al Jazeera America has already poached Ali Velshi and Soledad O’Brien from CNN, and the latest report is that the network that will begin airing on some outlets in the U.S. next month has signed former CNN lefty anchor David Shuster.

As Neil Clark Warren of eHarmony.com might say, some tweeters see multiple dimensions of compatibility:

http://twitter.com/#!/DonIrvine/status/359305156447309824

Not exactly surprising; birds of a feather… Report: @DavidShuster Joining Al Jazeera America huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/21/dav…— johnny dollar (@johnnydollar01) July 22, 2013

Even though there are reports that David Shuster will join Al Jazeera America, what remains to be seen is to what degree Al Jazeera America joins America:

http://twitter.com/#!/SandiBehrns/status/359348576884768770

Here’s the real funny part:

The Times’ Brian Stelter wrote that Al Jazeera America will cover more domestic than foreign news and “operate much like CNN (though the employees say they won’t be as sensational) and Fox News (though they say they won’t be opinion-driven).”

And what better way for a network to prove they won’t be opinion driven than going out and hiring David Shuster and Soledad O’Brien?

In a separate story, Al Jazeera America also announced that their new president will be a 30 year veteran of ABC News:

Did Jordan Peele rip off Chris Rock’s ‘white people’s’ Independence Day tweet?

http://twitter.com/#!/funnyaaron/status/352830406858514434

Independence Day emerged and went with nary a peep from Chris Rock this season. But comedian Jordan Peele ended up being available to “borrow” from Rock’s widely-criticized tweet from July 4, 2012.

http://twitter.com/#!/JordanPeele/status/352853511660249088

Look kinda familiar?

Hey, Peele does a pretty good Obama impression on “Key and Peele.” Perhaps he was only looking to get their reasonable share associated with the bad interest Chris Rock got for their America-bashing tweet. You understand, you’ve gotta spread the wide range around.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About America’s Sleeping Habits

Urgh. Stop reading this and take a damn siesta.

Sleeping is really, really important.

Disney / Via giphy.com

It’s so important that the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) released this 2015 poll and this study by Dr. Charles A. Czeisler about America’s sleeping habits.

1. Sleeping is a HUGE problem in the United States. It’s so bad that roughly 30% of American workers sleep less than six hours a night, according to NSF.

Jenny Chang / Via BuzzFeed

Not getting enough sleep can lead to a whole bunch of problems. Here’s why: Sleeping keeps our brains healthy, according to Charles A. Czeisler’s report in the Journal of the National Sleep Foundation.

Without a proper night’s rest, you’ll eat more and your memory and cognitive functions will become impaired. And you’ll even have a higher chance of contracting some serious illnesses, like Alzheimer’s disease and even some cancers.

2. It’s even worse for people who work the night shift: Around 44% of American night-shift workers are sleep-deprived.

AMC / Via giphy.com

This is why the World Health Organization has labeled night-shift work as a possible carcinogen.

3. Approximately 7.5 million Americans fall asleep at the wheel each month.

Fox / Via giphy.com

Unfortunately, this leads to about 6,400 deaths per year, writes Czeisler. That’s a huge number, considering we talk much less about drowsy drivers than we do about drunk drivers. The numbers are not that different: Around 10,000 people die because of drunk drivers per year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

4. About 64% of Americans who experience chronic pain also suffer from sleep deprivation, according to the 2015 poll by NSF.

giphy.com / Via Bravo

And we’re not talking about The Machinist-like crazy all-nighters. The participants were sleep-deprived by only about 40 minutes, which means they slept 6.7 hours instead of 7.3 hours. That may not seem like a lot of time, but it makes a huge difference.

In fact, Czeisler writes that after just one week of sleep deprivation, your body has a harder time resisting infection, you’ll become moody, and your glucose tolerance will decrease (which can lead to diabetes).

5. Healthy people sleep approximately 18–23 minutes longer than those who experience chronic pain.

Chris Colfer / Via giphy.com

Kristen Knutson, Sleep in America poll scholar, told BuzzFeed over email, though, “This poll could not address the direction of effect.” Knutson does mention, however, that getting 15–30 minutes more sleep per night could make a difference in how you feel.

If you’re having trouble falling asleep, check out these sleeping hacks to help you get a good night’s rest.

Basically, this is how you feel after an all-nighter:

Jesse Jackson, Jr. reportedly in treatment for alcoholism; Update: Mood disorder?

http://twitter.com/#!/mcmoynihan/status/223187143038730240

Yesterday, Twitchy told you about the unsubstantiated rumor that the Illinois congressman’s mysterious month-long absence was due to a suicide attempt. That rumor was quickly shot down by one of Jackson’s senior aides, and today, a new story has emerged.

From NBC Chicago:

The 2nd District Congressman reportedly has been in Arizona receiving treatment for alcoholism and addiction in Arizona, according to Andrea Mitchell.

We will continue to monitor this story and will provide updates as more information becomes available.

We’re already seeing conflicting reports.

The mystery continues.

BREAKING: No one has a clear sense about what is happening with Jesse Jackson, Jr.

— Monica Reida (@monicareida) July 11, 2012

Update:

ABC News and the Associated Press are reporting that Jackson’s office has acknowledged he is indeed in treatment, but the treatment is for a mood disorder:

Jesse Jackson Jr's office: Congressman is "receiving intensive medical treatment at a residential treatment facility for a mood disorder."

— ABC 7 Chicago (@ABC7Chicago) July 11, 2012

More from the AP:

The statement says Jackson is at a residential treatment facility and is responding positively to treatment. It says he’s expected to make a full recovery.

Staff members say the statement is from Jackson’s physician but the doctor’s name and location won’t be released due to federal privacy laws.

Jackson went on leave June 10, and his office initially said he was being treated exhaustion. But staff said last week that his condition was worse than previously thought and required inpatient treatment. They also disclosed Jackson has been battling emotional problems.

If this latest news in fact comes from someone in Jackson’s office, perhaps the Case of the Missing Congressman has finally been solved.

ThinkProgress: Omaha Wendy’s will ‘learn the hard way’ if it tangles with O-care

http://twitter.com/#!/thinkprogress/status/288407495276371969

Twitchy has extensively documented the effects that Obamacare is having on businesses big and small. Business owners have been forced to consider, and sometimes implement, layoffs and cuts in employee work hours in order to cope with rising health care costs.

It seems that an Omaha, Neb., Wendy’s franchise is facing similar cuts to workers’ hours, and ThinkProgress is none too pleased. In fact, the progressive blog suggests that the restaurant will “learn the hard way what happens when restaurants tangle with Obamacare.”

Liberals are totally on board with ThinkProgress:

But wait a minute … where’s that new tone we’ve been hearing so much about? ThinkProgress’ tweet sounds rather like a veiled threat, no?

Freedom? Please. Not if you dare ‘tangle’ with The One.
