White House issues statement on economy following G8 summit

Now that the international get-together at Camp David between the G8 world leaders has concluded, the White House has issued a statement.

The Camp David declaration adds: "The global economic recovery shows signs of promise, but significant headwinds persist."

A brutal scene is unfolding on the streets of Cairo. Journalist Bel Trew is on the scene and is tweeting developments as they occur:

Fucking hell. The police shot at, beat and stripped a man, dragged him across concrete. Dragged him naked, his face scrapping the ground.

Occupy Chicago’s #TakeTheSpring hashtag is under assault by a spambot

The Occupy Chicago protestors are getting down to serious business today. Lots of teach-ins, panel discussions, and workshops will take place throughout the Windy City to “create dialogue” and “TakeTheSpring” (whatever that means).

As usual, the Occupy protestors are using Twitter and other social media to organize and spread the word. Just one glitch: Someone or something — presumably some kind of bot pretending to be beautiful young women — is clogging up #TakeTheSpring with spam:
